Laura Birn

Laura Eveliina Birn is a Finnish film and television actress who has built a performing career across multiple screen formats and genres. She is known for her work in her native Finland as well as in international cinematic and television projects, having taken on roles in historical dramas, lighthearted comedies, and thought-provoking art-house films.

Birn was born on April 25, 1981, in Helsinki, Finland, where she spent her early years and pursued her professional training. She received her higher education in drama at the Helsinki Theatre Academy, successfully completing her master's degree from the institution in 2008.

Her early acting career includes several prominent Finnish film appearances that brought her widespread fame. In 2003, she featured in the film Helmiä ja sikoja alongside actor Mikko Leppilampi. She achieved further prominence in 2005 through her role in the production Lupaus. These projects helped establish her presence in Finnish cinema and showcased her ability to navigate diverse storytelling styles with equal skill.

As her career progressed, Birn gained notable visibility in foreign markets, particularly in the United States. She became recognized by American audiences for her supporting contribution to the Finnish production Joulutarina, known in English as Christmas Story. She further built her international profile with her appearance in the feature film A Walk Among the Tombstones.

Birn received significant critical recognition for her starring role in the 2012 feature Purge, a performance that earned her a nomination for the Satellite Award for Best Actress. In 2021, she joined the cast of the television series Foundation, portraying the robot character Eto Demerzel. She reprised this role for the show's second season, which premiered in 2023. Filming for the third season was completed in 2025, and that season was released in the same year.

Alongside her artistic milestones, Birn's career has set records in the Finnish entertainment industry. According to an article published in 2024 by the Finnish weekly news magazine Suomen Kuvalehti, which examined publicly available tax records, Birn holds the distinction of being the most highly-paid Finnish actor or actress of all time.

Outside of her acting work, Birn possesses broad language skills. Beyond her native Finnish, she is able to speak or understand English, Swedish, Portuguese, and Spanish. She is married and has a family with two children.
