Jay Leno

James Douglas Muir Leno is an American television host, comedian, writer, and actor. He is best known for hosting NBC's late-night talk show The Tonight Show, succeeding Johnny Carson in 1992. Throughout his career, Leno has worked extensively as a stand-up comedian, television personality, actor, voice performer, and automotive columnist.

Leno was born on April 28, 1950, in New Rochelle, New York. His mother, Catherine, was a homemaker born in Scotland who immigrated to the United States as a child, while his father, Angelo, was an insurance salesman born in New York to Italian immigrants. Leno grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, where he attended Andover High School. He later earned a bachelor's degree in speech therapy from Emerson College in Boston, where he founded a comedy club in 1973. His older brother, Patrick, served in the Vietnam War before becoming an attorney.

Leno began his television career performing stand-up comedy, making his debut on The Tonight Show in 1977. During the late 1970s and 1980s, he appeared in minor guest roles on television series such as Good Times, One Day at a Time, Alice, and Laverne & Shirley. He also appeared in films including American Hot Wax, Silver Bears, Americathon, and Polyester, and starred alongside Pat Morita in the 1989 direct-to-video film Collision Course. In addition to frequent guest appearances on Late Night with David Letterman, Leno became a regular substitute host for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show starting in 1986.

In 1992, Leno officially replaced Carson as host of The Tonight Show. He maintained a regular stand-up touring schedule throughout his hosting tenure. After hosting until May 2009, Leno stepped down to launch a new primetime program, The Jay Leno Show, which debuted on NBC in September 2009. Following timeslot adjustments and viewership issues across the network's late-night schedule, Leno returned as host of The Tonight Show on March 1, 2010, concluding his second tenure on February 6, 2014.

Following his departure from late-night television, Leno remained active in entertainment and media. He hosted the automotive series Jay Leno's Garage on CNBC from 2015 to 2022 and hosted the revival of the game show You Bet Your Life from 2021 to 2023. His other credits include voice acting roles, such as The Crimson Chin on The Fairly OddParents, a recurring role on the sitcom Last Man Standing, and guest judge appearances on competition shows. Leno continues to tour as a stand-up comedian and writes regularly on automotive topics for Popular Mechanics and The Sunday Times. He was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2014.
