David Blaine

David Blaine, born David Blaine White on April 4, 1973, in New York City, is an American magician, mentalist, and endurance performer. He is widely recognized for his high-profile endurance stunts and televised magic specials, beginning with his breakthrough performance in the late 1990s. Over his career, Blaine has achieved prominence through televised performances, public feats of physical endurance, and world record attempts.

Blaine was raised in Brooklyn by his mother, Patrice White, a teacher of Russian Jewish descent. His father, William Perez, is a Vietnam War veteran of Puerto Rican and Italian descent. After witnessing a subway magician at four years old, Blaine developed a lifelong interest in magic. He attended a Montessori school in Brooklyn before moving to Little Falls, New Jersey, where he attended Passaic Valley Regional High School. At age 17, he relocated to Manhattan, and his mother later passed away from cancer.

Blaine gained national prominence on May 19, 1997, when his first television special, David Blaine: Street Magic, aired on ABC. The special featured a low-key performance style that aimed to modernize magic, receiving attention for showcasing the spontaneous reactions of spectators. He followed this with the 1998 special Magic Man, which showed him traveling across the United States to entertain pedestrians. In 2002, Blaine published Mysterious Stranger: A Book of Magic, an autobiography and armchair treasure hunt featuring instructions on performing magic tricks.

In 1999, Blaine began performing extreme endurance stunts, starting with Buried Alive, in which he spent seven days encased in an underground box beneath a water-filled tank in New York City. In November 2000, he spent over 63 hours encased inside a block of ice in Times Square for the TV special Frozen in Time. In 2002, he stood for 35 hours atop an 80-foot pillar in Bryant Park during Vertigo. The following year, he completed a 44-day fast while suspended in a transparent Plexiglas box near the River Thames in London for the stunt Above the Below.

Blaine continued his physical challenges with Drowned Alive in 2006, spending seven days submerged in a water-filled sphere, followed by Revolution, where he was shackled to a rotating gyroscope for 52 hours. On April 30, 2008, he set a Guinness World Record on The Oprah Winfrey Show for oxygen-assisted static apnea by holding his breath for 17 minutes and 4 seconds. Later that year, he performed Dive of Death, hanging upside down in Central Park for 60 hours.

In subsequent years, Blaine presented various television specials and public feats, including catching a bullet in a cup in his mouth during What Is Magic? in 2010 and Beyond Magic in 2016. In 2012, he stood atop a pillar surrounded by high-voltage Tesla coils for 72 hours in Electrified: One Million Volts Always On. He subsequently starred in the ABC specials Real or Magic in 2013 and The Magic Way in 2020. In September 2020, Blaine completed Ascension, floating to an altitude of 24,900 feet over Arizona while holding a cluster of 52 helium-filled balloons.
