Matthew David McConaughey is an American actor known for his work across diverse film genres and television productions. He gained early recognition in the 1990s before establishing himself as a prominent leading man in both romantic comedies and critically acclaimed dramatic roles. Over his career, he has earned major industry honors, including an Academy Award, for his transformative performances.

McConaughey was born on November 4, 1969, in Uvalde, Texas. His mother was a published author and former teacher, while his father ran an oil pipe supply business and played college football before being drafted by the Green Bay Packers. Raised in a Methodist family alongside two older brothers, he moved to Longview, Texas, in 1980. After high school, he spent a year in Australia through a student exchange program, working as a bank teller and attorney assistant. He later enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, graduating in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Radio-Television-Film.

McConaughey began his professional career in the early 1990s with television commercials, music videos, and minor screen appearances. His breakthrough arrived with his role as Wooderson in Richard Linklater's coming-of-age comedy Dazed and Confused (1993).
