Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh is a Malaysian actress who has built a career spanning over four decades across diverse genres in television and cinema. Initially credited under the stage name Michelle Khan, she gained prominence in Hong Kong during the 1980s and 1990s for her performances in martial arts and action films where she performed her own stunts. She later achieved global recognition through starring roles in major international features and Hollywood productions.

Born on August 6, 1962, in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, Yeoh was raised in a family of Hokkien and Cantonese heritage. Her father was a lawyer, politician, and transport company founder, while her mother and extended family formed her early household. Growing up speaking English and understanding some Cantonese, she later learned fluent Cantonese and Mandarin during her acting career. She began ballet training at age four and moved to England at fifteen to attend The Hammond School. After a spinal injury prevented a career in professional ballet, she shifted her focus to choreography and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Crewe + Alsager College of Higher Education in 1983.

In 1983, Yeoh won the Miss Malaysia World contest and represented her country at Miss World before winning the Miss Moomba International pageant in Australia in 1984. Her onscreen debut occurred in a watch commercial with Jackie Chan, leading to a contract with Hong Kong's D&B Films. She made her leading debut in the 1985 feature Yes, Madam. After retiring briefly following her 1987 marriage to D&B Films co-founder Dickson Poon, she resumed acting after her divorce, establishing herself as a top action star through films such as Police Story 3: Super Cop, The Heroic Trio, Tai Chi Master, Wing Chun, and Magnificent Warriors.

Reverting to her birth surname, Yeoh made her Hollywood debut in the 1997 James Bond feature Tomorrow Never Dies, performing her own fight scenes. That same year, she appeared in The Soong Sisters. In 2000, she starred in Ang Lee's martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, earning a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Her English-language work expanded through roles in Memoirs of a Geisha, Sunshine, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. She also produced and starred in The Touch and featured in Asian productions like True Legend, Reign of Assassins, and Master Z: Ip Man Legacy.

In 2011, Yeoh portrayed political figure Aung San Suu Kyi in the biographical film The Lady. Moving into television, she held roles in Strike Back and played Captain Philippa Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery across three seasons. Her supporting film credits included the romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians, Last Christmas, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe feature Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Additionally, she built a voice acting portfolio with projects such as Kung Fu Panda 2, Minions: The Rise of Gru, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and The Tiger's Apprentice.

Yeoh achieved widespread critical acclaim for her leading performance as Evelyn Quan Wang in the 2022 surreal comedy film Everything Everywhere All at Once. For this role, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress, becoming the first Asian woman and first Malaysian to win in that category, along with receiving a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She subsequently starred in the series American Born Chinese and The Brothers Sun, the film A Haunting in Venice, the multi-part musical adaptation Wicked, and served as lead actor and chief producer for It's My Time.

Throughout her career, Yeoh has received numerous institutional honors. She was named one of People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in the World in 1997 and one of its 35 All-Time Screen Beauties in 2009. Time listed her among the 100 most influential people and named her Icon of the Year in 2022. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024, the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2026, and was named Asian Filmmaker of the Year at the 31st Busan International Film Festival. Outside of acting, Yeoh became an International Olympic Committee member in 2023 and serves as a United Nations Development Programme goodwill ambassador, actively campaigning for global road safety, disaster relief, animal conservation, and gender equality.
