Donnie Yen

Donnie Yen Chi-tan is a Hong Kong actor, filmmaker, martial artist, and action director. He is widely recognized for portraying Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man in the Ip Man film franchise between 2008 and 2019, as well as co-producing the 2018 spin-off Master Z: Ip Man Legacy. Over his career, Yen has received five Hong Kong Film Awards and three Golden Horse Awards for his accomplishments in cinema and action choreography.

Yen was born on July 27, 1963, in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. His mother was a soprano and martial arts grandmaster, while his father worked as a newspaper editor and violinist. His family relocated to Hong Kong when he was two years old and later settled in Boston, Massachusetts, when he was eleven. Introduced to music and athletics early in life, Yen learned the piano and practiced traditional Chinese martial arts, including tai chi. At age sixteen, he traveled to train with the Beijing Wushu Team.

While visiting Hong Kong at age eighteen, Yen auditioned for action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, leading to his first starring film role in Drunken Tai Chi in 1984. He achieved his breakthrough role playing the antagonist General Nap-lan in the 1992 film Once Upon a Time in China II. During the 1990s, he starred in martial arts features such as Iron Monkey and Wing Chun, and portrayed Chen Zhen in the 1995 television series Fist of Fury. In 1997, Yen established his production company, Bullet Films, and made his directorial debut with Legend of the Wolf.

Yen entered American cinema with roles in Highlander: Endgame in 2000 and Blade II in 2002, also providing fight choreography for the latter. He reunited with Jet Li in the 2002 film Hero, which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Yen went on to appear in several major Hollywood features, including Shanghai Knights, Rogue One, XXX: Return of Xander Cage, Mulan, and John Wick: Chapter 4. Through his production company, he also created action choreography for Western releases such as Stormbreaker and the video game Onimusha 3.

Yen's portrayal of Ip Man helped popularize Wing Chun in China, and the original 2008 film led to three direct sequels. Alongside his martial arts projects, he starred in notable Hong Kong releases including SPL: Sha Po Lang, Flash Point, Wu Xia, Kung Fu Jungle, Chasing the Dragon, and Raging Fire. For his work in Flash Point, he won Best Action Choreography at both the Golden Horse Film Awards and the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Throughout his career, Yen incorporated mixed martial arts elements into traditional action choreography. He expanded into comedy roles in films such as All's Well, Ends Well 2011, played Sun Wukong in The Monkey King, and reprised Chen Zhen in the 2010 film Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen. Yen has maintained an active career in Hong Kong cinema, with projects extending to the 2024 release The Prosecutor.
