Johnnie To

Johnnie To Kei-fung, born on April 22, 1955, is a prominent Hong Kong director and producer widely recognized for his contributions to action and crime cinema. Throughout his career, he has frequently collaborated with a consistent core of performers, screenwriters, and cinematographers. His creative work regularly investigates themes surrounding camaraderie, destiny, and the evolving social landscape of Hong Kong. Beyond his directorial projects, he established the Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival to foster emerging talent and co-founded the production entity Milkyway Image.

To entered the media industry at seventeen, starting as a messenger for the Hong Kong television network TVB. By 1973, he had advanced into directing and executive producing television shows. Although he helmed his debut theatrical feature in 1978, he maintained his work in television, directing and writing the acclaimed 1983 martial arts series The Legend of the Condor Heroes. While serving as an assistant television director during the Shaw Studios era, he directed All About Ah-Long (1989), starring Chow Yun-fat, which became a major box office success. During the late 1980s, To achieved significant commercial success primarily through comedies, including The Eighth Happiness (1988), the year's highest-earning film, and co-directed his first action project, The Big Heat (1988), produced by Tsui Hark.

In 1996, To teamed up with frequent collaborator Wai Ka-fai to form Milkyway Image, a production house focused on cost-effective independent films made alongside regular creative partners like scriptwriter Yau Nai-hoi and director Law Wing-cheung. Alongside his creative output, To served as chief operational officer for China Star Entertainment Group between 1999 and 2001. He was appointed to the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2004, subsequently chairing its Film and Media Arts Group.

To's filmography includes major works such as The Mission (1999), PTU (2003), Breaking News (2004), Election (2005), Election 2 and Exiled (both 2006), and Drug War (2012). His projects have enjoyed substantial recognition across global film festivals. At the Cannes Film Festival, Breaking News, Election, Election 2, Triangle (2007), Vengeance (2009), and Blind Detective (2013) were all featured, with Election and Vengeance competing for the Palme d'Or. His work has also appeared at Berlin, where Sparrow screened in competition in 2008, and Venice, which screened Throw Down, Exiled, Mad Detective, and Life Without Principle. Furthermore, titles such as Fulltime Killer were regularly selected for the Toronto International Film Festival.

To has earned several prestigious honors throughout his career. In 2005, he received the Time Machine Career Achievement Award at the Festival de Cine de Sitges, and he was named Filmmaker in Focus at the 2007 International Film Festival Rotterdam. The French Ministry of Culture appointed him an officer of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2009. His 2011 feature Life Without Principle was submitted as Hong Kong's entry for the 85th Academy Awards. Additionally, To directed a segment for the 35mm anthology film Septet: The Story of Hong Kong alongside other prominent filmmakers, showcased around the 45th Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2021.

Over the years, To has frequently participated in festival leadership and judging panels worldwide. He served as a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011, the Berlin International Film Festival in 2023, and the Tokyo International Film Festival's international competition section in 2024. He was also the Jury President for the 10th Asian Film Awards in 2016, joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2017, and was announced as Jury President for the 56th Golden Horse Awards in 2019 before stepping down later that year.
