Chan spent his early childhood in Hong Kong, where he attended St. Joseph's kindergarten and primary school. At twelve years old, he moved to England to continue his education at Dauntsey's School in Wiltshire, later studying architecture at Kingston University. During his time in the United Kingdom, he also received classical vocal training at the Royal Academy of Music, attaining Grade-8 certification. In July 1995, Chan returned to Hong Kong and placed first in the New Talent Singing Awards Competition, signing a contract with Capital Artists and shifting his focus to a professional music career.
Beginning in the late 1990s and expanding into the 2000s, Chan grew into a leading male artist in Hong Kong and the broader Chinese-language music market. In addition to singing, he is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who plays the piano, guitar, harmonica, and accordion during live performances. In 2005, he produced and starred in the stage musical Wrestling with God. He further expanded his business ventures in 2012 by founding his own music production company, EAS Music.
Throughout his recording career, Chan has released over 40 albums. Notable Cantonese releases include U87 in 2005, Stranger Under My Skin in 2011, and Chin Up! in 2023. He has also recorded popular soundtrack singles for media projects, including his 2021 hit Warrior of the Darkness and his 2024 single Isha's Song, both featured in media connected to Riot Games' Arcane series. His music has generated tens of billions of streams across major digital platforms including Spotify and NetEase Cloud Music.
As a touring artist, Chan has staged over 300 concerts worldwide since 1999. His concert tours have spanned Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, mainland China, Southeast Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia. Notably, he was the first Chinese singer to tour London's O2 Arena and the first Hong Kong solo performer to hold concerts at Beijing's National Stadium. In 2023, he launched his Fear and Dreams global tour.

In Hong Kong, he holds records for winning Ultimate Male Singer – Gold ten times and My Favorite Male Singer for nine consecutive years at the Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation. In Taiwan, he has received multiple Golden Melody Awards, winning Best Male Mandarin Singer three times, alongside accolades for Album of the Year and Best Lyrics for his song Homo Sapiens. In 2014, Kingston University granted him an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree in recognition of his music contributions.
Beyond his creative career, Chan has participated in numerous charitable endeavors. Appointed as an Orbis International Sight Ambassador in 2006, he has visited visually impaired individuals in India and Sichuan to assist fundraising efforts, and has led benefit concerts for disaster relief and mental health awareness initiatives. In his personal life, Chan married former actress Hilary Tsui in 2006, and the couple has a daughter born in 2004.
