Tony Leung Chiu-wai

Tony Leung Chiu-wai, born on June 27, 1962, is a highly regarded actor and singer from Hong Kong. Recognized across international cinema, he has earned prestigious acting honors worldwide, including accolades from the Cannes Film Festival and a selection among top Asian actors by CNN. Leung is widely celebrated for his decades of performances in both critically praised art-house features and massive commercial successes.

Raised in British colonial Hong Kong with ancestral roots in Taishan, Guangdong, Leung experienced a turbulent upbringing marked by family arguments regarding money. His father, a persistent gambler, abandoned the family when Leung was eight years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his younger sister alone. Following his father's departure, Leung became quiet and withdrawn. He later credited these early emotional hardships with inspiring his interest in acting, which served as a creative outlet for his suppressed feelings. Financial constraints led him to leave high school at age fifteen.

After quitting school, Leung worked various retail jobs, including delivering groceries and selling household appliances. Around age sixteen, he met Stephen Chow, who persuaded him to pursue performing. Leung joined TVB's acting training program, graduating in 1982. Initially assigned to present a children's television show named 430 Space Shuttle, he quickly transitioned into primetime drama series such as The Duke of Mount Deer and Police Cadet. During the 1980s, TVB promoted him alongside four other rising young performers as one of the network's "Five Tigers."

Leung exited television in 1989 to focus entirely on feature films. He gained early global attention starring in Hou Hsiao-hsien's Venice Golden Lion-winning drama A City of Sadness. Although he initially struggled to transition from television stardom to film lead roles, his partnership with director Wong Kar-wai revitalized his passion for the craft. Their collaboration on Chungking Express (1994) earned Leung dual Best Actor trophies at major regional ceremonies. During this period, he also famously declined a supporting actor nomination for Hard Boiled, arguing his role was a lead, which prompted organizers to revise their selection guidelines.

Over his film career, Leung appeared in three Golden Lion-winning pictures at the Venice Film Festival, including Cyclo and Ang Lee's Lust, Caution. He frequently collaborated with Wong Kar-wai on acclaimed projects such as Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, 2046, and The Grandmaster. Leung also starred in widely viewed features like Hero, Infernal Affairs, and Red Cliff. In addition to his screen acting, he maintained a successful Cantopop and Mandarin singing career during the 1990s before shifting his complete focus back to film.

Leung holds multiple records across major Chinese-language awards, having secured numerous Best Actor titles at the Hong Kong Film Awards and Golden Horse Awards. In 2023, he completed a "Grand Slam" by winning the Best Actor award at the Golden Rooster Awards for Hidden Blade. Internationally, he earned the Best Actor award at Cannes for In the Mood for Love and received a Venice Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. In 2021, he made his Hollywood debut portraying the antagonist in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

In his personal life, Leung dated actress Margie Tsang in the 1980s before beginning a long-term relationship with actress Carina Lau in 1989. After nineteen years together, the couple married in Bhutan in 2008. Leung continues to accept diverse international roles, recently starring in The Goldfinger, making an appearance in the European production Silent Friend, and preparing to return to television drama after nearly four decades away.
