Sammi Cheng

Sammi Cheng Sau-man, born on August 19, 1972, is a Hong Kong singer and actress recognized as one of the region's most prominent female vocalists. Often referred to by the media as the Cantopop Diva during the 1990s, she has achieved total album sales exceeding 25 million copies across the Asia-Pacific region. Raised in a family with three sisters and one brother, she attended SKH St. Peter's Primary School and Tang Shiu Kin Victoria Government Secondary School. During her school years, she temporarily adopted the English name Twinnie before settling on Sammi.

Cheng entered the entertainment industry in 1988 at the age of 16 after placing third in the New Talent Singing Awards. Her performance led to a contract with Capital Artists, where she balanced her ongoing high school studies with music commitments. In late 1988, she recorded tracks with David Lui for the television drama Deadly Secret. She released her eponymous debut studio album, Sammi, in September 1990, followed by Holiday in 1991 and Never Too Late in 1992. Her early releases earned her multiple accolades, including the Outstanding Newcomer award at the 1990 RTHK Top 10 Gold Songs Awards.

In 1993, Cheng experienced significant success with a duet performed alongside Andy Hui and debuted a distinct public image featuring vibrant hair styling and dance-pop singles like Chotto Matte and Ding Dong. Despite media criticism regarding her vocal styling on certain tracks and radio bans affecting her single Ten Commandments, her releases remained popular. Following a hiatus from public life in 1995, she released her final project with Capital Artists, After, before officially signing with Warner Music Group later that year.

Under Warner Music, Cheng achieved substantial commercial success with her Cantonese studio albums, starting with Can't Let You Go in late 1995 and Never Want to Give You Up in 1996. Both records achieved triple platinum certifications in Hong Kong and generated top-charting singles. She simultaneously expanded her reach into Mandarin-language pop markets across Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. Over her career, Cheng has released more than 80 studio albums and 10 live concert recordings, while delivering around 200 concert performances, including 115 shows at the Hong Kong Coliseum.

In addition to her music achievements, Cheng built a prominent acting career, starring in nearly 40 feature films and seven television dramas. In the early 2000s, she headlined several successful romantic comedy films that performed exceptionally well at the box office. For her performance in the 2022 feature film Lost Love, she earned four major best actress honors, including the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actress. Throughout her multi-decade career, she has accumulated numerous major music and sales awards across Asia and North America.
