Deng Chao

Deng Chao is a Chinese actor and filmmaker who first gained widespread recognition through television projects before transitioning into a highly successful film career. Born on February 8, 1979, in Nanchang, Jiangxi, he grew up in a blended family as the son of a museum secretary and a factory cadre. He pursued training in the performing arts, studying at the Jiangxi Vocational Academy of Art from 1995 to 1998 before enrolling in Beijing's Central Academy of Drama.

While in college, Deng performed in the student stage comedy Cuihua Shang Suancai, which led to a lasting professional partnership with writer Yu Baimei. After finishing his studies, he entered screen acting and achieved his breakthrough starring in the 2003 historical television drama The Young Emperor. His prominence grew further when he appeared opposite Sun Li in the military romance series Happiness as Flowers.

Deng successfully transitioned to feature films with his supporting role in the war drama Assembly, earning a Hundred Flowers Award for Best Supporting Actor. He followed this with acclaimed performances in the romantic thriller The Equation of Love and Death, which earned him a Golden Phoenix Award, and the fantasy mystery Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame, which brought a Hong Kong Film Award nomination. He subsequently took on main roles in the fantasy film Mural and the wuxia feature The Four.

In 2013, Deng earned critical praise as one of the leads in the hit drama American Dreams in China. The following year, he made his directorial debut alongside Yu Baimei with the box-office success The Breakup Guru and joined the cast of the popular variety show Keep Running. In 2015, Deng earned major acting accolades, including the Golden Rooster Award for Best Actor and a Shanghai International Film Festival award, for his work in Cao Baoping's crime drama The Dead End.

Deng's commercial success expanded further in 2016 when he starred in Stephen Chow's record-breaking comedy The Mermaid, cementing his status as one of China's most lucrative film actors. He continued leading high-profile films over the following years, including the drama Duckweed, the suspense film The Liquidator, Zhang Yimou's historical feature Shadow, and the family drama Looking Up, which he also co-directed.

In recent years, Deng has remained active across cinema, television, and major entertainment broadcasts. Since 2020, he has been a regular cast member on the online program HAHAHAHAHA and co-directed a segment for the anthology film My People, My Homeland. His television and hosting engagements have included serving as a mentor on CHUANG 2021, presenting at the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers awards ceremonies, and performing in multiple China Media Group Spring Festival Galas through early 2023.
