Zhang Hanyu

Zhang Hanyu is a Chinese actor who gained widespread fame for his leading performance in the 2007 war film Assembly. Over the course of his screen career, he has appeared in numerous acclaimed feature films and television productions, establishing himself as a prominent figure in Chinese cinema.

Born in Beijing on December 19, 1964, Zhang pursued his artistic education at the Central Academy of Drama, graduating in 1988. He initially entered the entertainment industry working as a voice actor, providing Chinese dubbing for major international film projects including Troy, Shark Tale, and The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

Zhang eventually transitioned to live-action television, appearing in minor roles. His screen career gained momentum through recurring supporting performances in movies helmed by filmmaker Feng Xiaogang, such as Sorry Baby, Big Shot's Funeral, Cell Phone, and A World Without Thieves.

His career breakthrough occurred in 2007 when Feng Xiaogang cast him in his first starring role in the film Assembly. His portrayal of the main character brought him national prominence and earned him widespread acclaim, including Best Actor accolades at the Golden Horse Film Awards, the Hundred Flowers Awards, the Huabiao Awards, and the Huading Awards.

Following his breakthrough, Zhang took on diverse roles across various genres. He starred in the crime drama The Equation of Love and Death, the espionage feature The Message, the action film Bodyguards and Assassins, and portrayed Zhang Liang in the historical drama White Vengeance. He also starred as Song Jiang in the 2011 television adaptation All Men Are Brothers and reunited with Feng Xiaogang to portray a priest in the 2012 disaster movie Back to 1942. In 2013, he played an opera performer in Guan Hu's comedy feature The Chef, the Actor, the Scoundrel.

Zhang continued to lead major film projects, starring as a covert PLA operative in Tsui Hark's 2014 wuxia feature The Taking of Tiger Mountain, a performance that earned him the Golden Rooster Award for Best Actor. His subsequent screen projects included Guan Hu's crime drama Mr. Six, Zhang Yimou's fantasy epic The Great Wall, and the 2016 crime thriller Operation Mekong, which achieved critical praise and became the highest-grossing Chinese police film up to that point. His later credits include John Woo's police thriller Manhunt, Leon Lai's directorial debut Wine War, as well as lead roles in The Captain (2019) and Chinese Doctors (2021).
