Mark Dacascos

Mark Alan Dacascos is an American actor, martial artist, and television personality. A fourth-degree black belt in Wun Hop Kuen Do, he achieved recognition through action films such as Only the Strong, Crying Freeman, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Cradle 2 the Grave, and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. On television, he is well known for portraying Wo Fat on Hawaii Five-0 and serving as The Chairman in the Iron Chef franchise.

Dacascos was born on February 26, 1964, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father, Al Dacascos, is a martial arts instructor of Filipino descent who created Wun Hop Kuen Do, while his stepmother, Malia Bernal, is an award-winning martial artist. His mother, Moriko McVey-Murray, is of Irish and Japanese heritage. Raised partly in Hamburg, Germany, where he learned German, Dacascos drew early inspiration from Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. He attended Los Angeles Valley College, joining its gymnastics team, and Portland State University. In addition to earning a fourth-degree black belt in his father's martial art style, Dacascos studied capoeira, Muay Thai, and Wushu.

His acting career began after being discovered in San Francisco's Chinatown by assistant director Chris Lee and hairstylist Rexall Chinn. Although his initial scenes in the film Dim Sum: A Little Bit of Heart were cut, he was later cast as the Red Ranger in the unsold pilot Bio-Man, a concept that paved the way for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Dacascos subsequently built his career by primarily performing in martial arts roles.

Dacascos achieved his breakout performance in the 1993 film Only the Strong, playing a capoeira master who guides high school students. He followed this with a co-starring role in the 1994 video game adaptation Double Dragon alongside Scott Wolf. Over the following years, he appeared in feature films including Drive, Crying Freeman, Cradle 2 the Grave, and Nomad. His performance as Mani in the 2001 film Brotherhood of the Wolf earned him a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

On television, Dacascos portrayed Eric Draven in The Crow: Stairway to Heaven and Eubulon in Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight. He secured recurring roles as Wo Fat in Hawaii Five-0, Kung Lao in Mortal Kombat: Legacy, Mr. Giyera in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and an antagonist in Wu Assassins. In 2019, he starred as the assassin Zero in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

In non-scripted television, Dacascos became widely recognized as The Chairman on Food Network's Iron Chef America beginning in 2005, later reprising the character for Iron Chef Australia, Iron Chef: Mexico, and the 2022 Netflix series Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend. His career also includes performance work for video games such as Stranglehold and Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom. In 2023, Dacascos was inducted into the Martial Arts History Museum Hall of Fame.
