Sheila Atim

Sheila Atim is a Ugandan-born British actor, writer, and musician. She is widely recognized for her acclaimed work across theatre, television, and film, having earned major accolades including two Laurence Olivier Awards for her performances in the musical Girl from the North Country and the play Constellations.

Born in Uganda around 1991, Atim relocated to the United Kingdom with her mother as an infant. She spent her upbringing in Rainham, London, attending the Coopers' Company and Coborn School. During her teenage years, she briefly engaged in modeling after a distinctive hairstyle choice led to her participation in a 2009 London Fashion Week event. She subsequently earned a degree in biomedical science from King's College London while pursuing formal acting instruction at the Weekend Arts Centre in Belsize Park.

Atim made her professional stage debut in late 2013 at Shakespeare's Globe in the musical production The Lightning Child, written by her acting instructor Ché Walker alongside Arthur Darvill. Following her initial appearance, she featured in a series of theatrical projects, including Ghost Town, Klook's Last Stand, Rachel, and a touring staging of Hopelessly Devoted. She also took on roles in several Royal Shakespeare Company stagings, including The Jew of Malta, Love's Sacrifice, and Volpone, while contributing original songs to Walker's play The Etienne Sisters.

Her reputation as a leading theatrical performer expanded in 2016 through a silent performance in Les Blancs at the National Theatre and roles in the Donmar Warehouse's all-female Shakespeare Trilogy, which encompassed The Tempest, Henry IV, and Julius Caesar. She achieved widespread acclaim portraying Marianne Laine in the original production and West End run of Girl from the North Country. Atim later portrayed Emilia in Othello at Shakespeare's Globe, starred in Babette, and secured an additional Laurence Olivier Award for her starring role in Constellations.

In addition to acting, Atim plays the piano, violin, bass, and drums. She composed the music for the play Time Is Love and authored the play Anguis, which debuted at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe featuring her own songs. Her screen career includes a film adaptation of Twelfth Night, the television drama Harlots, the BBC miniseries The Pale Horse, the Amazon series The Underground Railroad, the series The Irregulars, and the Netflix sports film Bruised.

Atim was cast in the pilot for the unreleased Game of Thrones prequel Bloodmoon and was subsequently chosen to portray Akasha in Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat. Over her career, she has received a Clarence Derwent Award, a Screen Nation award, and two Laurence Olivier Awards. In June 2019, she was appointed an MBE for her services to drama, and she serves on the Board of Trustees for The Old Vic Theatre Trust.
