Lombardi began his professional journey in the performing arts by joining the stage company of Ugo Chiti, where he performed for a decade. Following this foundational period, he co-founded the stage company Piccoli Briganti alongside Nicola Magnini. Their ensemble focused on comedic productions that adapted classic fables and children's literature, including stage adaptations of Peter Pan and Snow White.

In addition to acting, Lombardi expanded his creative work into writing and directing. He made his debut as a playwright with the production Stile Libero. He gained critical attention in 2013 after winning the Florence Fringe Festival for his drama Fists of Sulfur, originally titled Pugni di Zolfo, which was subsequently showcased at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Lombardi experienced a major career breakthrough in the mid-2010s. His performance in the hit theatrical production The Pride, directed by Luca Zingaretti, brought him widespread recognition. During this same period, he gained international television exposure by portraying Cardinal Mario Assente in the television series The Young Pope, directed by Paolo Sorrentino.

Throughout his career, Lombardi has earned notable industry honors. His performance in The Pride resulted in a nomination for a Le Maschere Award. Later in his career, he was recognized for his screen work, winning the Nastro d'Argento award for best actor in a comedy film for his performance in the 2024 film Romeo Is Juliet.
