Pierce Brosnan

Pierce Brendan Brosnan is an Irish actor best known for portraying James Bond in four films released between 1995 and 2002. His career spans several decades across stage, television, and feature films, earning him two Golden Globe Award nominations along with global recognition. Beyond his work as a performer, Brosnan has been involved in film production, charitable endeavors, and environmental activism.

Born on 16 May 1953 in Drogheda, County Louth, Brosnan spent much of his childhood in Navan, County Meath. After his father left during his infancy, he was raised largely by his maternal grandparents and extended family while his mother worked as a nurse in England. He moved to Scotland and subsequently London at age eleven. Leaving school at sixteen, he initially studied commercial illustration at Saint Martin's School of Art before discovering a passion for performing at the Ovalhouse, leading to three years of formal acting training at the Drama Centre London.

After graduating in 1975, Brosnan began his career as an assistant stage manager and actor at the York Theatre Royal, followed by a notable London stage role in Tennessee Williams' play The Red Devil Battery Sign. He soon transitioned to television, securing appearances in British productions before achieving wider prominence in miniseries such as Manions of America and Nancy Astor, the latter yielding his first Golden Globe nomination. Moving to Southern California in 1982, he gained widespread popularity starring as the titular character in the NBC detective series Remington Steele.

Following the end of Remington Steele, Brosnan appeared in feature films such as The Fourth Protocol, The Lawnmower Man, and Mrs. Doubtfire. In 1994, he was announced as the fifth actor to play James Bond, debuting in the 1995 hit GoldenEye. He reprised the role in Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day. Between Bond installments, he appeared in diverse feature films, including Mars Attacks!, Grey Owl, and the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair.

In 1996, Brosnan co-founded the production company Irish DreamTime alongside Beau St. Clair, producing titles such as The Nephew and The Thomas Crown Affair. Following his tenure as Bond, he continued taking on varied film projects, starring in the dark comedy The Matador—which earned him a second Golden Globe nomination—as well as Laws of Attraction, After the Sunset, and The Ghost Writer. He also joined the cast of major musical and fantasy productions, including Mamma Mia!, its 2018 sequel, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.

In subsequent years, Brosnan took on superhero and narrative roles, portraying Dr. Kent Nelson / Doctor Fate in the 2022 DC Extended Universe movie Black Adam and narrating the 2008 children's release Thomas & Friends: The Great Discovery. His 2025 credits include the feature film The Thursday Murder Club and the crime drama series MobLand. Over his career, Brosnan was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1997, received an Irish Film and Television Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003, and was ranked fifteenth on The Irish Times list of the greatest Irish film actors in 2020.
