Sophie Marceau

Sophie Marceau, born Sophie Danièle Sylvie Maupu on November 17, 1966, in Paris, France, is a French actress, director, and author. The second child of a shop assistant and a truck driver, she grew up in Paris. Following her parents' separation when she was nine years old, she entered the entertainment industry as a teenager after taking photographs at a modeling agency, which led to her film debut.

Her breakthrough came when she was cast in the 1980 teen film La Boum, a major commercial success. After signing a contract with the Gaumont studio, she starred in the 1982 sequel La Boum 2, earning a César Award for Most Promising Actress. At age sixteen, she bought out her studio agreement to pursue independent career choices. During the 1980s, she transitioned into dramatic roles through feature films such as Fort Saganne, Joyeuses Pâques, Police, Descente aux enfers, L'Étudiante, and Chouans!, earning early artistic recognition for her performances.

Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Marceau expanded her screen portfolio by collaborating with director Andrzej Żuławski on projects including My Nights Are More Beautiful Than Your Days, La note bleue, and Fidelity. She also starred in widely seen European productions such as the comedy Fanfan and the historical adventure Revenge of the Musketeers. Alongside her screen work, she earned acclaim in the theater, winning a Molière Award for Best Female Newcomer for her stage role in Eurydice and later starring in Pygmalion.

Marceau achieved global prominence in 1995 for her portrayal of Princess Isabelle in the historical epic Braveheart. This milestone was followed by prominent international roles in films such as Beyond the Clouds, Firelight, Marquise, and Anna Karenina. In 1999, she appeared in A Midsummer Night's Dream and played the antagonist Elektra King in the James Bond feature The World Is Not Enough, winning a Blockbuster Entertainment Award.

In addition to acting, Marceau developed a career as a writer and filmmaker. She published her semi-autobiographical novel Menteuse in 1996 and made her feature directorial debut with Speak to Me of Love in 2002, winning the Best Director award at the Montreal World Film Festival. She subsequently directed the feature films Trivial and Mrs Mills. As an actress, her later projects include Anthony Zimmer, Female Agents, LOL (Laughing Out Loud), Don't Look Back, Happiness Never Comes Alone, Arrêtez-moi, Jailbirds, and Everything Went Fine.

Beyond feature films, Marceau has appeared on hundreds of magazine covers and served as an international brand ambassador for companies including Chaumet and DS Automobiles. She maintains strong commercial and public popularity across Asian markets. In 2003, she was named an Officer in the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and in 2016 she publicly refused the Legion of Honour. Marceau has two children from past relationships with Andrzej Żuławski and Jim Lemley, speaks French and English, and plays the cello.
