Gavin Rossdale

Gavin McGregor Rossdale, born on 30 October 1965, is an English musician best known as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the rock group Bush. He helped establish the band in 1992, leading them to become one of the most commercially successful rock acts of the 1990s. In addition to his primary work with Bush, Rossdale has recorded with the band Institute, launched a solo music career, and acted in various film and television productions.

Rossdale was born in London, England, to Douglas Rossdale and Barbara Stephan. His mother was born in Scotland, while his father was of Russian Jewish heritage, with the family surname changed from Rosenthal. Raised primarily in the northern London neighbourhood of Kilburn, Rossdale experienced his parents' divorce when he was 11 years old. Around this time, he became interested in the late 1970s British punk rock scene through his elder sister, Lorraine, drawing influence from acts such as X-Ray Spex, the Buzzcocks, and the Sex Pistols. In 1979, he began attending the independent Westminster School.

During the 1980s, Rossdale formed a pop group called Midnight, which toured and released two singles, and later joined a band named The Little Dukes, which disbanded in late 1991. In 1992, Rossdale co-founded the grunge band Bush, initially named Future Primitive, alongside lead guitarist Nigel Pulsford. Bush released their debut album, Sixteen Stone, in 1994, which achieved massive commercial success. The group followed with several commercially successful albums, including Razorblade Suitcase, Deconstructed, The Science of Things, and Golden State, before eventually disbanding in 2002.

Following Bush's split, Rossdale formed the group Institute, releasing the album Distort Yourself in 2005. He then embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut solo album, Wanderlust, in 2008, which yielded the top 40 single "Love Remains the Same." He also contributed vocals to tracks by Blue Man Group and Apocalyptica. Bush reunited in 2010 and released the album The Sea of Memories in 2011. The band subsequently released five more albums: Man on the Run, Black and White Rainbows, The Kingdom, The Art of Survival, and I Beat Loneliness.

Alongside his musical career, Rossdale has pursued acting. He played the half-demon Balthazar in the 2005 film Constantine, and appeared in films such as Zoolander, Mayor of the Sunset Strip, Little Black Book, The Game of Their Lives, How to Rob a Bank, The Bling Ring, and Habit. His television credits include guest appearances on Criminal Minds, Burn Notice, and Hawaii Five-0.

In 2013, Rossdale received the Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement in Songwriting, which was presented by Chris Martin. Over his career, he served as a judge for the tenth annual Independent Music Awards and sang at a 2017 memorial concert for Linkin Park vocalist Chester Bennington. Rossdale was married to singer Gwen Stefani from 2002 until their divorce was finalized in 2016, and the former couple shares three sons. He is also the father of model Daisy Lowe from a previous relationship with Pearl Lowe. As of 2024, Rossdale was in a relationship with singer Xhoana X.
