About Hanna Schygulla

Hanna Schygulla is a German actress and chanson singer who is best known for her prominent artistic contributions to the New German Cinema. She is particularly celebrated for her long-standing creative partnership with film director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, with whom she first worked in 1965. Over a career spanning several decades, she has performed in numerous acclaimed international films and received major honors at prominent international film festivals.

Schygulla was born on December 25, 1943, in Königshütte, which later became Chorzów, Poland. Her parents were German citizens named Antonie, whose maiden name was Mzyk, and Joseph Schygulla, both of whose surnames are of Polish or Silesian origin. Her father worked as a timber merchant before being drafted as an infantryman into the German Army during World War II. After being captured by American forces in Italy, he was held as a prisoner of war until 1948. In 1945, Schygulla and her mother arrived in Munich as refugees following the expulsion of the local German-speaking population. During the 1960s, she pursued university studies in Romance languages and German studies in Munich while taking acting lessons in her spare time.

Acting gradually became Schygulla's primary focus. Her partnership with Fassbinder became central to her early career, though it was marked by artistic and financial disagreements. During the filming of Effi Briest in September 1972, she led a revolt over low pay and conflicting interpretations of her character. The dispute led to a multi-year hiatus in their working relationship until they reunited for the 1978 film The Marriage of Maria Braun. Her performance in the lead role earned her the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 29th Berlin International Film Festival in 1979.

Throughout the 1980s, Schygulla appeared in prominent international film projects. In 1980, she acted in Fassbinder's television miniseries adaptation of Berlin Alexanderplatz. She starred alongside Bruno Ganz in Volker Schlöndorff's 1981 drama Circle of Deceit and appeared opposite Isabelle Huppert in Jean-Luc Godard's 1982 film Passion. In 1983, she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for her role in Marco Ferreri's film The Story of Piera. She also served as a jury member at the 15th Moscow International Film Festival in 1987.

In the 1990s, Schygulla expanded her creative work by becoming a chanson singer. She performed several songs in Juliane Lorenz's 1998 documentary film Life, Love and Celluloid, which focused on Fassbinder and related topics. Her screen acting continued into the 2000s with appearances in Béla Tarr's Werckmeister Harmonies in 2000, Rosa von Praunheim's film Fassbinder's Women in 2000, Vanessa Beecroft's performance art project VB51 in 2002, and Fatih Akın's film The Edge of Heaven in 2007.

Schygulla received major career achievements later in life, including the Honorary Award from the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival in 2007 and the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2010. She continued acting in feature films, including Alexander Sokurov's Faust in 2011 and Cédric Kahn's French drama The Prayer in 2018, which screened at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival. Residentially, Schygulla lived in Paris from 1981 until 2014, after which she relocated to Berlin.
