Isabelle Huppert

Isabelle Anne Madeleine Huppert is a French actress who has appeared in over 120 feature films, predominantly in lead roles. Recognized as one of the most prominent performers in French cinema, she has worked extensively with directors like Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, and Michael Haneke. In addition to her filmography, she has maintained a prolific theatrical career, starring in stage productions in Paris and globally.

Born on 16 March 1953 in Paris, Huppert was raised in Ville-d'Avray as the youngest of five children. Her father was a safe manufacturer of Austro-Hungarian and Alsatian background, and her mother was an English teacher who raised her in the Catholic faith. Her siblings include filmmaker Caroline Huppert. In 1968, she began acting studies at the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Versailles, where she received a performance prize, later attending the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique.

Huppert debuted on television in 1971 and made her feature film debut in 1972. She gained wider public recognition through her appearance in the 1974 film Les Valseuses, followed by an early César nomination for Aloïse. Her international breakthrough arrived with La Dentellière in 1977, earning her a BAFTA Award. In 1978, she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for Violette Nozière, her first of seven cinematic collaborations with director Claude Chabrol.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Huppert established a reputation for playing complex, emotionally distant characters. She featured in projects such as Heaven's Gate, Loulou, Coup de Torchon, The Bedroom Window, and Une Affaire de Femmes. Her portrayal of a post-office worker in Chabrol's 1995 film La Cérémonie brought her a César Award for Best Actress and a Volpi Cup from the Venice Film Festival, an award she previously earned for Story of Women.

In 2001, Huppert won another Cannes Best Actress award for her role in Michael Haneke's drama The Piano Teacher. She continued working internationally in films like 8 Women, I Heart Huckabees, and White Material. In 2016, she achieved broad acclaim for starring in Things to Come and Elle. Her performance in Elle earned her a Golden Globe, a second César Award, an Independent Spirit Award, and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Alongside her film career, Huppert is the most nominated actress for the Molière Award, with nine nominations and an honorary award presented in 2017. She also received the Europe Theatre Prize and has starred in prominent global stage productions, including Mary Stuart, Medea, Hedda Gabler, The Maids, and Phèdre(s). In 2009, she served as president of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival. Her later film credits include Amour, Louder Than Bombs, Greta, Frankie, and Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.
