About Björk
Björk Guðmundsdóttir is an Icelandic singer, songwriter, composer, record producer, and actress. Recognized for her distinct voice, three-octave vocal range, and eccentric public persona, she has developed an eclectic musical style over a career spanning five decades. Incorporating electronica, pop, dance, trip hop, jazz, and avant-garde music, she has sold over 40 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling alternative artists and among the most influential musicians of her era.
Born on 21 November 1965 in Reykjavík, Björk was raised by her mother, an activist, in a commune following her parents' divorce. At age six, she enrolled at Barnamúsíkskóli to study classical piano and flute. After a radio broadcast of a school recital, she was offered a contract with the Fálkinn record label, releasing her self-titled debut album in 1977 at age 11. As a teenager, she joined several musical acts, including the all-girl punk band Spit and Snot, jazz fusion group Exodus, Tappi Tíkarrass, and gothic rock group Kukl.
In 1986, former Kukl members and other musicians formed the alternative rock group the Sugarcubes. Signing with One Little Indian and Elektra Records, the band achieved international prominence with their 1988 album Life's Too Good, which sold over one million copies globally. The Sugarcubes toured internationally and released two further albums before disbanding in 1992.
Björk subsequently moved to London to begin her solo career, releasing her breakthrough album Debut in 1993, followed by Post in 1995. Both albums combined electronic, pop, and trip hop elements to earn critical praise and major global success, generating hits such as "Human Behaviour", "Army of Me", and "It's Oh So Quiet". During this period, she won two BRIT Awards in 1994 and collaborated with a wide array of international producers and artists.
Her solo catalog expanded through further stylistic experimentation, beginning with Homogenic in 1997. Her subsequent studio releases included the glitch-influenced Vespertine (2001), the a cappella album Medúlla (2004), the pop-focused Volta (2007), and the interactive album Biophilia (2011). Following the death of co-producer Mark Bell, she collaborated with Arca on Vulnicura (2015) and Utopia (2017), before serving as sole producer on Fossora (2022).
Beyond her recording career, Björk starred in the films The Juniper Tree and Lars von Trier's Dancer in the Dark (2000). For the latter, she won the Best Actress Award at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Her honors include the Order of the Falcon, five BRIT Awards, 16 Grammy nominations, and a 2015 retrospective exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art. She is also an active advocate for environmental causes in Iceland.
