Julia Fiona Roberts is an American actress who first achieved widespread recognition for her performances in romantic comedies and blockbusters before taking on roles in dramas, thrillers, and independent cinema. She is widely known for her starring roles in films such as Pretty Woman, My Best Friend's Wedding, Notting Hill, and Runaway Bride, as well as her Oscar-winning portrayal in Erin Brockovich. Over her career, she has received an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, and three Golden Globe Awards. Outside of acting, she operates the production company Red Om Films, has served as a global brand ambassador for Lancôme since 2009, and was the world's highest-paid actress throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.

Roberts was born on October 28, 1967, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts, both of whom were former actors and playwrights who co-founded a local theater workshop and acting school. She grew up in Smyrna, Georgia, attending Fitzhugh Lee Elementary School, Griffin Middle School, and Campbell High School. Although she initially aspired to become a veterinarian and played clarinet in her school band, she decided to pursue an acting career in New York City after graduating high school, where she enrolled in acting classes and signed with the Click Modeling Agency.

After making her television debut in a 1987 episode of Crime Story and appearing in the 1988 film Satisfaction, Roberts earned critical notice for her role in the independent film Mystic Pizza (1988). She achieved a major career breakthrough in the 1989 feature Steel Magnolias, earning her first Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe Award. Her global stardom was solidified the following year opposite Richard Gere in the smash hit Pretty Woman (1990), which earned her a second Oscar nomination and another Golden Globe.

Throughout the 1990s, Roberts built a diverse filmography across multiple genres. She went on to star in high-profile projects throughout the 2000s and 2010s, including the ensemble heist films Ocean's Eleven and Ocean's Twelve, Mona Lisa Smile, The Mexican, America's Sweethearts, Charlie Wilson's War, Valentine's Day, Eat Pray Love, August: Osage County, Wonder, Ticket to Paradise, Leave the World Behind, and After the Hunt. Her television work includes a Primetime Emmy-nominated role in HBO's The Normal Heart, as well as lead roles in Homecoming and the limited series Gaslit.
