George Strait

George Harvey Strait Sr., born May 18, 1952, in Poteet, Texas, is an American country music singer, songwriter, actor, music producer, and rancher. Known as the "King of Country Music," he is recognized for pioneering the neotraditional country style in the 1980s. His authentic cowboy image and roots-oriented sound emerged during an era when country pop dominated the Nashville music industry. Across his career, he has achieved over 70 million record sales in the United States and holds the RIAA record for the most certified albums by any artist, with 33 gold or platinum releases.

Strait was raised in Pearsall, Texas, where his father was a junior high school mathematics teacher and cattle rancher. Following his parents' divorce during his fourth-grade year, he was raised alongside his older brother by his father. He attended Pearsall High School, where he originally played in garage rock bands inspired by British Invasion groups like the Beatles. His musical style gradually transitioned to country music under the influence of live Texas performances and artists such as Hank Williams, George Jones, and Merle Haggard.

After graduating high school, Strait eloped with Norma Voss in 1971 and enlisted in the United States Army, serving as a finance clerk in Hawaii until 1975 and reaching the rank of corporal. While stationed in Hawaii, he began performing with an Army-sponsored country band called Rambling Country. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he attended Southwest Texas State University, earning a degree in agriculture. During his college years, he joined the band Stoney Ridge, which he renamed the Ace in the Hole Band, performing at central and south Texas honky-tonks while continuing to manage cattle ranches.

In February 1981, after years of regional performances and recording tracks for D Records, Strait signed a recording deal with MCA Records with the assistance of his long-time manager, Erv Woolsey. His debut major-label single, "Unwound," became a minor hit in 1981, followed by his first number-one country hit, "Fool Hearted Memory," in 1982. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he built a massive commercial discography, releasing landmark albums such as Ocean Front Property, which became the first country record to debut at number one, and starring in the 1992 film Pure Country.

Over his multi-decade career, Strait accumulated 60 total number-one songs across all music charts—including a record 44 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. He won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album in 2009 for Troubadour, was elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and received multiple Entertainer of the Year honors from both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music.

Strait is also noted for his live performance history, having introduced festival-style touring and 360-degree stage setups. In 2014, his final show for The Cowboy Rides Away Tour set an indoor concert attendance record at AT&T Stadium with 104,793 attendees. In mid-2024, he broke the record for the largest ticketed single-act concert in U.S. history at Kyle Field in Texas with 110,905 spectators. That same year, he was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame for its class of 2025.
