About Nev Schulman
Yaniv "Nev" Schulman is an American television host and producer born on September 26, 1984. He is best known for starring in the 2010 documentary film Catfish and serving as the host and executive producer of its follow-up reality series, Catfish: The TV Show, on MTV.
Schulman was raised in New York City in a Jewish family and has an older brother, Ariel Schulman, who is an actor and filmmaker. After studying dance for five years, Nev Schulman pursued photography. He attended Sarah Lawrence College from 2004 to 2006, where he studied both photography and dance, but was later expelled after punching a female student whom he allegedly mistook for a male.
At age nineteen, Schulman established a film and photography production company alongside his brother Ariel. In 2004, he began photographing dance within the contemporary ballet community in New York City. He also became a founding member of the Young Leadership Committee for the youth organization Leave Out Violence.
In 2010, Schulman was the subject of the documentary Catfish, which was filmed by his brother and business partner Henry Joost. The premise followed Schulman as he fell in love with a woman he met on the Internet, only to later discover that she was not who she claimed to be.
Building on the film's premise, Schulman became the host and executive producer of Catfish: The TV Show for MTV in 2012, alongside filmmaking partner Max Joseph. The show introduces couples in real life who fell in love online without having met. Production was briefly suspended in 2018 due to an allegation of sexual misconduct, but the report was deemed not credible after an investigation, allowing production to resume.
Beyond television hosting, Schulman authored the 2014 book In Real Life: Love, Lies & Identity in the Digital Age, which shares his personal history and observations from his work on Catfish. He also appeared as himself alongside Joseph in the 2018 feature film Nobody's Fool.
In September 2020, Schulman competed on season 29 of Dancing with the Stars. Paired with professional dancer Jenna Johnson, he finished in second place behind season winners Kaitlyn Bristowe and Artem Chigvintsev. On August 31, 2026, he participated in Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro, paired with season one winner Adele Zaikman.
In his personal life, Schulman connected with Laura Perlongo on Instagram. The couple became engaged in May 2016 and married on July 22, 2017. They have three children: a daughter, Cleo James, born in October 2016, and two sons, Beau Bobby Bruce, born in January 2019, and Cy Monroe, born in September 2021.
