Patricia Velásquez

Patricia Carola Velásquez Semprún is a Venezuelan actress, model, speaker, and philanthropist. She achieved international recognition for her portrayal of Meela Nais and Anck-su-namun in the adventure film The Mummy (1999) and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns. Beyond her performing career, she is widely recognized for her international fashion accomplishments, humanitarian projects supporting indigenous communities, and public speaking engagements.

Born on January 31, 1971, in Maracaibo, Venezuela, Velásquez is the fifth of six children born to a mestizo father and a mother of indigenous Wayuu background. Growing up in a multicultural environment, she became fluent in four languages, speaking Spanish, English, French, and Italian.

Velásquez studied acting in Los Angeles and New York City between 1995 and 2000. During her modeling career, she walked in ready-to-wear runway shows for top fashion houses such as Chanel, Chloé, John Galliano, Claude Montana, and Dolce & Gabbana. She appeared in advertisements for Monsoon, Chanel's Allure, and Roberto Verino's Verino fragrance, while featured on magazine covers including Vogue, Marie Claire, and Harper's Bazaar. She also served as the face of CoverGirl for eight years, becoming the brand's first Latin supermodel to successfully cross over into mainstream media.

Her screen career encompasses appearances in prominent music videos for artists such as George Michael, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rod Stewart, and Ricardo Montaner. She transitioned into television with roles on series including Arrested Development, The L Word, Rescue Me, CSI: Miami, Ugly Betty, and Hawaii Five-0, alongside competing on the twelfth season of The Apprentice. On stage, she made her debut leading the 2006 production of School of the Americas at New York's Public Theater. Her notable feature films include The Curse of La Llorona, Malignant, Brut Force, the human-trafficking drama Maya, and No Address, which highlights homelessness. She has also contributed voice acting to video games such as SSX Tricky and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

In 2002, Velásquez established the Wayuu Taya Foundation to enhance living conditions, preserve traditions, and promote sustainable growth for the indigenous Wayuu people of northern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela. The foundation also created a fundraising campaign following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. In recognition of her advocacy work, she was appointed a UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2003 and a Goodwill Ambassador for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples of the Americas by the Organization of American States in 2018.

Velásquez frequently speaks at global forums including TED events, the Clinton Global Initiative, and the Human Rights Campaign, covering topics such as personal transformation, resilience, authenticity, and leadership. Her honors include the 2009 Women Together Award, the 2015 LA Femme Film Festival Humanitarian Award, the 2018 HRC Visibility Award, a 2022 Imagen Award nomination for List of a Lifetime, and a 2024 profile in Time magazine. In 2015, she published her memoir, Straight Walk, documenting her journey from poverty to success, and she is currently in a relationship with philanthropist Alison Lawton.
