Billy Crudup

William Gaither Crudup, born July 8, 1968, is an American performer known for his work across film, television, and theatre. Throughout his career, he has earned widespread recognition, winning two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Critics' Choice Television Awards, and a Tony Award. He has also received nominations for two Golden Globe Awards and a Laurence Olivier Award.

Crudup was born in Manhasset, New York, to Georgann and Thomas Henry Crudup III. Raised alongside two brothers, he moved with his family during his youth from New York to Texas and later to Florida, graduating from Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale in 1986. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he participated in student theater productions, before completing a Master of Fine Arts at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1994.

Shortly after finishing his studies, Crudup made his Broadway debut in the 1994 production of Tom Stoppard's play Arcadia. He soon transitioned to film, appearing in feature productions such as Sleepers (1996), Inventing the Abbotts (1997), and Without Limits (1998), portraying runner Steve Prefontaine in the latter. In 1999, he provided the English voice role for Ashitaka in Princess Mononoke and received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Jesus' Son. His prominent screen roles continued with his portrayal of guitarist Russell Hammond in the 2000 drama Almost Famous. From 1998 to 2005, he also served as the narrator for Mastercard's "Priceless" commercial campaign.

Alongside his film career, Crudup remained active on stage, earning Tony Award nominations for his performances in The Elephant Man in 2002 and The Pillowman in 2005. He won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play in 2007 for portraying literary critic Vissarion Belinsky in Tom Stoppard's The Coast of Utopia. His film credits expanded to include Big Fish (2003), Mission: Impossible III (2006), The Good Shepherd (2006), Watchmen (2009) as Doctor Manhattan, Public Enemies (2009), Spotlight (2015), The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015), Jackie (2016), 20th Century Women (2016), Alien: Covenant (2017), and Justice League (2017).

On television, Crudup portrayed former U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in the 2011 television movie Too Big to Fail and starred in the series Gypsy (2017) and Hello Tomorrow! (2023). Beginning in 2019, he took on the role of a network executive in the Apple TV+ drama The Morning Show, a performance that earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards and two Critics' Choice Television Awards. His later screen projects include the film Jay Kelly (2025).

In theatre, Crudup secured a Tony nomination for a 2011 revival of Arcadia, performed in No Man's Land and Waiting for Godot from 2013 to 2014, and starred in the solo play Harry Clarke, receiving a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for its 2024 West End presentation. His subsequent theatrical projects include Ghosts (2025), High Noon (2025–2026), and a 2026 West End production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Crudup was in a relationship with actress Mary-Louise Parker from 1996 to 2003, with whom he has a son, and later dated actress Claire Danes. In June 2023, he married actress Naomi Watts in New York City, followed by a second ceremony in Mexico in June 2024.
