Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, born July 3, 1962, is an American film actor and producer recognized as a prominent figure in global cinema. Renowned for his commercial success and high earning status, he has headlined numerous major box-office releases across the action and drama genres, frequently performing his own cinematic stunts.

Cruise experienced an unsettled Catholic upbringing marked by financial hardship, attending fifteen different schools across fourteen years. His family moved repeatedly between the United States and Canada, where he first participated in school theater during fourth grade. Though he briefly attended a Catholic seminary intending to enter the priesthood, he ultimately completed his secondary education at Glen Ridge High School in New Jersey in 1980, where he engaged in athletics and school theatrical productions.

At age eighteen, Cruise moved to New York City and later Los Angeles to pursue professional acting. He made his feature film debut with a minor role in Endless Love (1981), followed by significant supporting parts in Taps (1981) and The Outsiders (1983). His major career breakthrough occurred with his leading performance in Risky Business (1983), and his status as a major Hollywood star was solidified with the release of Top Gun (1986).

Through the remainder of the 1980s and 1990s, Cruise earned critical acclaim for his work in dramatic feature films. He co-starred in major productions including The Color of Money (1986) and the Oscar-winning Rain Man (1988). His depiction of real-life veteran Ron Kovic in Born on the Fourth of July (1989) brought him a Golden Globe Award and his first Academy Award nomination. He maintained strong box-office performance with roles in A Few Good Men (1992), The Firm (1993), Interview with the Vampire (1994), Jerry Maguire (1996)—which earned him another Golden Globe—and Magnolia (1999), which yielded a third Golden Globe victory.

In 1996, Cruise initiated his long-running involvement as star and producer of the Mission: Impossible film series, playing intelligence operative Ethan Hunt across decades of installments. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, he established himself as a dominant presence in action and science fiction, starring in films such as Vanilla Sky (2001), Minority Report (2002), The Last Samurai (2003), Collateral (2004), War of the Worlds (2005), Jack Reacher (2012), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), and Top Gun: Maverick (2022).

Cruise achieved a Guinness World Record for starring in eleven consecutive feature films that each grossed over $100 million between 2012 and 2025. Over his career, he has received an Honorary Palme d'Or, an Academy Honorary Award, and a British Film Institute Fellowship in 2025. In late 2024, the U.S. Navy honored him with the Distinguished Public Service Award for his cinematic portrayal of military figures.

Beyond acting and producing, Cruise is a licensed pilot, having held his certification since 1994. He has also been an outspoken public advocate for the Church of Scientology throughout his career.
