Kristin Scott Thomas

Dame Kristin Ann Scott Thomas is a British actress born in Redruth, Cornwall, on May 24, 1960. She is widely known for her extensive roles across stage, television, and film in both the United Kingdom and France. A five-time nominee for both the BAFTA Award and the Olivier Award, she won a Supporting Actress BAFTA for Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) and an Olivier Award for Best Actress for a 2008 revival of The Seagull. She was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in The English Patient (1996).

Scott Thomas spent much of her childhood in Dorset following an early life marked by tragedy. Her father, a Royal Navy pilot, died in an aviation accident when she was five, and her stepfather, also a naval aviator, died in a crash in 1972. After attending Cheltenham Ladies' College and St Antony's Leweston, she moved to London in 1978 and enrolled at the Central School of Speech and Drama. When her request to transfer into acting studies was turned down, she relocated to Paris to work as an au pair and trained in acting at the École nationale supérieure des arts et techniques du théâtre.

She made her feature film debut at age 25 as Mary Sharon in Under the Cherry Moon (1986). Her breakthrough arrived in the 1988 screen adaptation of A Handful of Dust, which earned her the Evening Standard British Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer. Through the 1990s, she appeared in Bitter Moon, Four Weddings and a Funeral, An Unforgettable Summer, and The English Patient. Following a short spell in Hollywood appearing in projects such as The Horse Whisperer (1998) and Random Hearts, she temporarily stepped away from screen work.

Throughout her career, Scott Thomas has featured prominently in both English and French cinema. Her French-language performances include Tell No One (2006), Leaving (2009), and I've Loved You So Long (2008), for which she won a European Film Award for Best Actress. Other notable film credits include Gosford Park (2001), Sarah's Key (2010), Nowhere Boy (2010), Only God Forgives (2013), Darkest Hour (2017), and Tomb Raider (2018).

Her stage work includes lead roles in productions of Bérénice, Betrayal, Old Times, and Electra. Her performance as Arkadina in Anton Chekhov's The Seagull brought her an Olivier Award in 2008, a role she also performed in New York. On television, she earned an Emmy nomination for a guest role in Fleabag (2019) and has portrayed MI5 Deputy Director General Diana Taverner in the spy series Slow Horses since 2022.

Scott Thomas made her feature directorial debut with the film My Mother's Wedding, which began filming in June 2022. Her honors include appointment as an OBE in 2003, a DBE in 2015, and a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 2005. She was married to French obstetrician François Olivennes from 1987 to 2005, with whom she has three children, and married Bloomberg News editor-in-chief John Micklethwait in September 2024.
