Kate Winslet

Kate Elizabeth Winslet is an English actress known primarily for her portrayals of headstrong women in independent films and period dramas. Born on 5 October 1975, she has received numerous accolades over her career, including an Academy Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, five BAFTA Awards, five Golden Globe Awards, and a Grammy Award. In 2012, she was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

Winslet was raised in Reading, Berkshire, in a supportive family with limited financial means. Her mother worked as a nanny and waitress, while her father was a struggling actor who took laboring jobs, and her maternal grandparents ran the Reading Repertory Theatre Company. Inspired by her family, Winslet began acting at a young age. At eleven, she enrolled at the Redroofs Theatre School in Maidenhead, where she participated in stage productions and commercial work. She made her screen debut in 1991 in the BBC science fiction television series Dark Season. Lack of funds forced her to leave Redroofs at age sixteen, after which she worked at a delicatessen to support herself.

Winslet made her feature film debut in Peter Jackson's psychological drama Heavenly Creatures (1994), playing a teenage murderess. The role earned her critical acclaim. The following year, she portrayed Marianne Dashwood in the adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility (1995), winning a BAFTA Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress alongside an Academy Award nomination. After featuring in the period dramas Jude and Hamlet in 1996, she achieved global stardom starring as Rose DeWitt Bukater in James Cameron's epic romance Titanic (1997). The film became the highest-grossing movie of its time and earned Winslet an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Following Titanic, Winslet eschewed major blockbuster offers in favor of critically acclaimed independent films to ensure long-term career growth. Her subsequent projects included the low-budget drama Hideous Kinky (1998) and Jane Campion's Holy Smoke! (1999). She went on to earn further recognition for her performances in the biopic Quills (2000) and the espionage thriller Enigma (2001), as well as playing the younger version of novelist Iris Murdoch in Iris (2001).

In 2004, Winslet was cast against type in the contemporary sci-fi romance Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which marked a major turning point in her career. She gained additional praise for her roles in Finding Neverland (2004), Little Children (2006), The Holiday (2006), and Revolutionary Road (2008). For her portrayal of a former Nazi camp guard in The Reader (2008), she won both the Academy Award and the BAFTA Award for Best Actress.

Winslet's later work includes portraying historical figures in Steve Jobs (2015) and Lee (2023). She earned two Primetime Emmy Awards for her starring roles in the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce (2011) and Mare of Easttown (2021). Beyond acting, she won a Grammy Award for narrating the audiobook Listen to the Storyteller (1999), recorded a song for Christmas Carol: The Movie (2001), and co-founded the autism awareness charity Golden Hat Foundation. Winslet has three children, including actors Mia Threapleton and Joe Anders. Divorced from directors Jim Threapleton and Sam Mendes, she has been married to businessman Edward Abel Smith since 2012.
