Will Young

William Robert Young is an English singer, songwriter, and actor. He gained widespread prominence after winning the inaugural series of the ITV talent contest Pop Idol in 2002, becoming the first winner of the international Idol franchise. Following his victory, his debut double A-sided single, "Anything Is Possible" / "Evergreen," became the fastest-selling debut single in the United Kingdom. He subsequently placed fifth in the international competition World Idol performing his rendition of "Light My Fire."

Born on 20 January 1979 in Wokingham, Berkshire, Young was raised in Hungerford alongside his twin brother and an older sister. He attended Horris Hill Preparatory School, where he served as head chorister and learned the piano, before boarding at Wellington College. Young later attended d'Overbroeck's College to retake his A-Levels, subsequently enrolling at the University of Exeter in 1998. He graduated in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in politics, during which time he participated in university theatre productions and completed work experience at Sony Records. He then moved to London to study musical theatre at the Arts Educational Schools in Chiswick.

Young's initial foray into the entertainment industry occurred in 1999 when he successfully auditioned for a boy band featured on the television show This Morning, though the group disbanded without commercial success. In late 2001, he paused his musical theatre studies to participate in Pop Idol. During the competition, Young progressed through various rounds performing jazz, lounge, and soul arrangements, eventually securing first place in the final vote against fellow contestant Gareth Gates.

Following his win, Young released his debut studio album, From Now On, in 2002, which debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart. His second album, Friday's Child, released in 2003, achieved greater commercial success, earning a five-time platinum certification in the UK and producing three top-five singles. His subsequent studio releases, Keep On in 2005, Let It Go in 2008, and Echoes in 2011, also attained multi-platinum status.

In 2015, Young achieved his fourth UK number-one album with 85% Proof. His later releases continued to chart highly, with Lexicon reaching number two in 2019, Crying on the Bathroom Floor reaching number three in 2021, and Light It Up reaching number five in 2024. Over the course of his recording career, Young has spawned numerous top-ten UK singles—including four number-one hits—undertaken widespread concert tours, and accumulated over eight million worldwide album sales as of 2009. His industry recognition includes two Brit Awards from twelve overall nominations.

In addition to his recording career, Young has performed as an actor across film, television, and theatre. For his performance in the 2013 London stage revival of the musical Cabaret, he received a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. He has also authored several published books, including the autobiography Funny Peculiar in 2012, To be a Gay Man in 2020, and The A–Z of Wellbeing in 2022. His later projects include competing as "Lionfish" on The Masked Singer in January 2022 and issuing the compilation album 20 Years: The Greatest Hits later that year.
