Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Brianne Clarkson, born April 24, 1982, is an American singer, songwriter, and television personality. She rose to fame after winning the first season of American Idol in 2002 and established a multi-decade career in music and television. Recognized for her vocal power and versatility, she was named one of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time by Rolling Stone and is credited with having a lasting impact on televised talent shows.

Clarkson was born in Fort Worth, Texas, to Jeanne Ann, a first-grade English teacher, and Stephen Michael Clarkson, a former engineer. Raised in Burleson, Texas, in a conservative Southern Baptist household, she attended Pauline Hughes Middle School, where a teacher invited her to join the choir after hearing her sing. She went on to perform in high school musical productions before graduating from Burleson High School in 2000. She declined multiple full college scholarships to pursue a music career independently, working several jobs and briefly moving to Los Angeles before returning home.

In May 2002, Clarkson auditioned for the inaugural season of American Idol and won the competition on September 4, 2002. Following her win, she signed with RCA Records, 19 Recordings, and S Records. Her debut single, "A Moment Like This", became the best-selling single of 2002 in the United States and set a record for the largest leap to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Her R&B and gospel-influenced debut studio album, Thankful, was released in 2003 and entered the Billboard 200 at number one.

Clarkson shifted to pop rock for her second studio album, Breakaway (2004), which became her most commercially successful release and one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century. Supported by major singles such as "Since U Been Gone", "Behind These Hazel Eyes", "Because of You", and "Breakaway", the album sold over twelve million copies worldwide. She promoted the project with extensive touring through 2006, the same year Mediabase named her the most-played artist on U.S. radio.

Her subsequent studio releases included the darker rock album My December (2007), followed by pop rock records All I Ever Wanted (2009) and Stronger (2011), both of which featured Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles. In 2013, she released her first holiday album, Wrapped in Red, which became the year's best-selling Christmas album. Clarkson followed this with Piece by Piece (2015), her final album released under her original record deal.

After signing with Atlantic Records, Clarkson recorded Meaning of Life (2017), When Christmas Comes Around... (2021), and Chemistry (2023), the latter serving as her final major-label release. In addition to her recording career, she served as a coach on The Voice for ten seasons between 2018 and 2026, becoming the show's female coach with the most winning contestants. In 2019, she began hosting her own daytime talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show.

With more than 82 million records sold worldwide, Clarkson is one of the world's best-selling music artists. Her accolades include three Grammy Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, four American Music Awards, eight Daytime Emmy Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She is also the first act in history to reach number one on each of Billboard's pop, adult contemporary, country, and dance airplay charts.
