Emily VanCamp

Emily Irene VanCamp is a Canadian actress born on May 12, 1986. She gained international recognition for starring as Emily Thorne in the ABC series Revenge from 2011 to 2015. Her prominent television work also includes regular roles in the drama series Everwood, the family drama Brothers & Sisters, and the medical drama The Resident. Since 2014, she has portrayed Sharon Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

VanCamp was raised in Port Perry, Ontario. Her father worked as an animal nutritionist, and her first job involved delivering food for his business. She began taking dance lessons at age three and aspired to become a professional dancer by age 11. After attending a summer training program in Montreal, she was accepted at age 12 to the École supérieure de ballet du Québec, the training program of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, and lived with a French-Canadian family.

Her interest in acting began in 1998 after visiting her sister Katie on a film set. She enrolled in weekend acting classes, hired an agent, and appeared in commercials before making her television acting debut in a non-speaking scene on Are You Afraid of the Dark?. She subsequently appeared in the TV movie Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, the film Lost and Delirious, and miniseries such as Dice. Her breakthrough came at age 15 when she was cast as Sam Dolan in the mystery series Glory Days.

Creator Greg Berlanti then cast VanCamp as Amy Abbott on the WB drama series Everwood, which ran from 2002 to 2006. Her performance earned her four Teen Choice Award nominations and one Young Artist Award nomination. During breaks from the series, she appeared in films including No Good Deed, A Different Loyalty, Rings, and Carriers. In 2007, Berlanti cast her as Rebecca Harper in ABC's Brothers & Sisters, where she remained a series regular for four seasons before returning as a guest in its fifth season.

While working on Brothers & Sisters, VanCamp starred in the 2008 independent drama Norman, winning awards from the San Diego Film Festival and the Breckenridge Festival of Film. She also portrayed Esther in the television miniseries Ben Hur. In 2011, she starred in the TV movie Beyond the Blackboard before securing the lead role of Amanda Clarke, also known as Emily Thorne, on ABC's Revenge, which brought her further recognition and Teen Choice Award nominations.

In 2014, VanCamp made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Sharon Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She later reprised the role in Captain America: Civil War, the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and the animated series What If...?. Her film credits during this period include the independent dramas The Girl in the Book and Boundaries, the latter marking her first bilingual role performing in fluent French.

From 2017 to 2021, VanCamp starred as nurse practitioner Nicolette "Nic" Nevin in the Fox medical drama The Resident, returning for the fifth-season finale after departing to focus on her family. In her personal life, she speaks fluent French and trained in ballet, tap, jazz, and hip-hop. She married her Revenge co-star Josh Bowman in December 2018, and the couple has two daughters. She is also involved in charitable efforts to help endangered tigers and supports equal pay.
