She has also been named among the highest-paid actresses in the world in multiple years.

Born on November 22, 1984, in the Manhattan borough of New York City, Johansson was raised in a creative family. Her father, an architect originally from Denmark, and her mother, a film producer from a Jewish background, supported her early artistic interests. She grew up alongside an older sister, an older brother, a twin brother, and a half-brother. Demonstrating an early interest in musical theater, dance, and acting, she trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and attended the Professional Children's School to prepare for a professional acting career.

Johansson began her acting career on stage in an off-Broadway production before making her screen debut in the 1994 fantasy comedy North. She earned early notice for her work in the independent film Manny & Lo, securing an Independent Spirit Award nomination, and later gained wider attention in Robert Redford's drama The Horse Whisperer. Her critical breakthrough arrived with her role as a cynical outcast in the 2001 adaptation Ghost World, which established her reputation for nuanced performances.

In 2003, Johansson successfully shifted to adult roles with starring performances in Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation and the drama Girl with a Pearl Earring. Her work in Lost in Translation earned her the BAFTA Award for Best Actress, and both performances yielded Golden Globe nominations. Throughout the mid-2000s, she expanded her filmography through a series of collaborations with director Woody Allen, including Match Point, Scoop, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, while also starring in studio features such as The Island and The Prestige.

Johansson achieved widespread global stardom through her portrayal of Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, appearing in eight films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Iron Man 2 in 2010 through her solo project Black Widow in 2021. Alongside her franchise work, she starred in acclaimed science fiction films including Her, Under the Skin, and Lucy. In 2019, she made history by securing two simultaneous Academy Award nominations—Best Actress for Marriage Story and Best Supporting Actress for Jojo Rabbit.

In addition to her film work, Johansson has established a presence in theater and music. She won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in the 2010 Broadway revival of A View from the Bridge and later starred in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
