About Clark Johnson

Clark Johnson is an American-Canadian actor and director who has worked extensively in television and film. He is widely known for portraying David Jefferson on Night Heat, Clark Roberts on E.N.G., Detective Meldrick Lewis on Homicide: Life on the Street, Augustus Haynes on The Wire, and Cherry Pitts in Daredevil: Born Again. In addition to his screen performances, he has established a prominent career as a director across numerous television series and feature films.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on September 10, 1954, Johnson was raised by an Afro-Caribbean father from Trinidad and Tobago and a white mother before the family relocated to Canada. He has three siblings, including jazz singer Molly Johnson and actress and singer Taborah Johnson. An athlete in his youth, he attended Eastern Michigan University on a partial football scholarship but was expelled for stealing food from the cafeteria. He later played Canadian football while attending the University of Ottawa and Loyola College/Concordia University before studying film at the Ontario College of Art. He was selected by the Toronto Argonauts in the seventh round of the 1978 CFL draft, though he did not play professionally.

Johnson began his career working behind the scenes in special effects, including on David Cronenberg's film The Dead Zone, which provided a backup income while he pursued acting. He made his feature film acting debut in 1981, securing roles in Killing 'em Softly, Colors, Wild Thing, Adventures in Babysitting, and Nowhere to Hide. On television, he appeared in shows such as The Littlest Hobo and Hot Shots, and played Butch Fuller in the premiere episode of the 1989 miniseries The Women of Brewster Place.

In 1993, Johnson was cast as Detective Meldrick Lewis on Homicide: Life on the Street, remaining with the series for all seven seasons and its reunion film. Known for inventing his own dialogue and jokes on set, he transitioned into directing during the show's fourth season with the episode "Map of the Heart." He later directed several more episodes of the series and made a brief cameo appearance as Lewis in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Johnson frequently collaborated with writer David Simon, directing the pilot, two early episodes, and the series finale of The Wire, as well as starring in its fifth season as Baltimore Sun editor Augustus Haynes. He also starred as Senator Robert Bettencourt alongside John Goodman in the political comedy series Alpha House, directing its first-season finale and filming a second season in 2014.

As a director, Johnson helmed the feature films S.W.A.T. and The Sentinel, alongside the HBO project Boycott, in which he also acted. His television directing credits include the pilot episodes for Sleeper Cell, Lights Out, and The Shield, earning a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for directing the pilot of The Shield. He has also directed episodes of Third Watch and Luke Cage. Johnson received Genie Award nominations for his roles in Rude and Nurse.Fighter.Boy, and was honored with the Earle Grey Award for lifetime achievement at the 6th Canadian Screen Awards. He also works as a guest instructor at HB Studio.
