Lombard began her career in modeling, where her major break came from a photoshoot featuring a Native American theme. Throughout her modeling career, photographs of her were featured in prominent fashion magazines such as Elle and Vogue.

To prepare for her acting career, Lombard studied in New York City at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and the Actors Studio. During this period, she gained valuable stage experience performing at the Gallery Theatre and the Neighborhood Playhouse.

Lombard made her feature film debut playing a princess in L'île (The Island). In 1993, she secured her first major film role starring as Antoinette Cosway, a Jamaican heiress, in Wide Sargasso Sea, an adaptation of the novel by Jean Rhys. That same year, she appeared in a supporting part in The Firm, followed by her supporting performance in Legends of the Fall in 1994. Later in the decade, she starred opposite Bruce Willis in the 1996 film Last Man Standing.

Transitioning into television during the 2000s, Lombard joined the main cast of the drama series The L Word for its first season, later returning to reprise her role as Marina Ferrer as a guest in its fourth and sixth seasons. She was also cast as a recurring character named Geneviève on the FX series Rescue Me, and appeared as part of the television series The 4400.

In addition to these regular and recurring roles, Lombard's television credits extend to appearances on major procedural and drama series, including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: NY, NCIS, and Timeless.
