Charles Esten

Charles Esten Puskar III, also known professionally as Charles Esten or Chip Esten, is an American actor, musician, singer-songwriter, and comedian born on September 9, 1965. He is widely recognized for his performance as country musician Deacon Claybourne in the drama series Nashville from 2012 to 2018, a role that sparked his professional musical career. He is also prominent for playing Ward Cameron on the teen series Outer Banks and for his long-running participation as a regular cast member on the improvisational comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway?.

Esten was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and moved to Alexandria, Virginia, at age nine after his parents divorced. Raised by his mother alongside his younger sister, he attended T.C. Williams High School, graduating in 1983. He then attended the College of William and Mary, where he sang lead vocals for the band N'est Pas and earned an economics degree in 1987. Shortly after, he relocated to the United Kingdom to make his theater debut in the title role of the musical Buddy. His early television work included competing on the game show Sale of the Century in 1988 under the name Chip Puskar.

In 1992, Esten debuted on the British version of Whose Line Is It Anyway?. He later joined the American edition hosted by Drew Carey in 1999 as a core cast member, frequently performing in musical improvisation games with Wayne Brady. His comedic screen and stage work extended to programs such as Drew Carey's Green Screen Show, On the Spot, Drew Carey's Improv-A-Ganza, and live touring groups including Improv All-Stars and Whose Live Anyway?.

Throughout his acting career, Esten appeared in various television programs, including guest roles on The Office, ER, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager, NCIS: Los Angeles, Married... with Children, and The Mentalist. His feature film credits include Billy Crystal's 61* as well as roles in Kevin Costner films such as The Postman, Thirteen Days, and Swing Vote. Additionally, he played a recurring role in the series Tell Me Your Secrets and starred as fictional founder Carl Hardee Sr. in commercial campaigns for Carl's Jr. and Hardee's.

Esten's musical endeavors feature regular performances at the Grand Ole Opry, where he completed his 100th show in 2018 and later served as a guest host in 2023. Between July 2016 and July 2017, he released a new self-written or co-written digital single every week for 54 consecutive weeks, securing a Guinness World Record for the most consecutive weekly single releases. He has toured across North America and Europe, released tracks for the Nashville soundtrack, and prepared his debut studio album, scheduled for release in early 2024.

Esten is married to Patty Hanson, whom he met in college, and the couple has three children. The family resides in Nashville. In addition to his creative work, Esten serves as the national chairman for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual Light the Night Walks fundraising campaign, motivated by his daughter's survival from leukemia.
