Emily Browning

Emily Jane Browning is an Australian actress born on December 7, 1988, in Melbourne, Victoria, to parents Andrew and Shelley Browning. Raised alongside two younger brothers, she attended Hurstbridge Learning Co-op and Eltham High School. Browning made her acting debut in the 1998 Hallmark Channel television movie The Echo of Thunder. She followed this with early television roles in Australian productions, including High Flyers, Something in the Air, and Blue Heelers.

Browning made her American film debut in the 2002 horror feature Ghost Ship, which served as her breakthrough role and brought her wider public attention alongside an Australian Film Institute Award for Best Young Actress. Before this, she appeared in the 2001 film The Man Who Sued God, and later co-starred in the 2003 film Ned Kelly alongside Heath Ledger and Orlando Bloom. In 2004, she portrayed Violet Baudelaire in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, a role that won her the Australian Film Institute International Award for Best Actress in 2005. During this period, she also appeared in Evermore's 2006 music video for Light Surrounding You and served as a festival ambassador for the L'Oreal Fashion Festival in 2007.

In 2009, Browning starred as the lead in the horror film The Uninvited. She subsequently played the lead role of Babydoll in Zack Snyder's 2011 action film Sucker Punch, performing live vocals for the film's soundtrack. She also starred in Julia Leigh's 2011 independent drama Sleeping Beauty, which screened at both the Cannes Film Festival and the Sydney Film Festival, earning critical praise for her performance.

Over the following years, Browning maintained a steady presence in film projects. In 2013, she starred in Summer in February, God Help the Girl, Magic Magic, and Plush. She featured in Paul W. S. Anderson's 2014 historical disaster film Pompeii, earning the Breakthrough Performer of The Year award from the Hamptons International Film Festival. Her other film projects from this period include the 2014 feature Shangri-La Suite, the 2015 biographical crime thriller Legend opposite Tom Hardy, and the 2017 film Golden Exits, alongside appearances in music videos for Imperial Teen and Years & Years.

Browning expanded her television work by starring as Laura Moon in the Starz series American Gods from 2017 to 2021. She also had a recurring role in Showtime's drama series The Affair between 2018 and 2019. In 2022, she appeared in the drama film Monica and was attached to the thriller Brightwater. She subsequently starred as Zoe in the 2023 Amazon Prime Video series Class of '07 and joined the cast of the feature film The Fox, set to premiere at the 2025 Adelaide Film Festival.

In her personal life, Browning lived in London at age 21 before relocating to Los Angeles, eventually residing on the Eastside. She married Eddie O'Keefe in April 2023, following previous relationships with actors Max Irons and Xavier Samuel. Browning has spoken publicly about her experiences with depression and therapy, and describes her personal beliefs as spiritual rather than religious.
