Light was raised in a Jewish family in Trenton, New Jersey, as the daughter of Pearl Sue, a model, and Sidney Licht, an accountant. She graduated from high school at St. Mary's Hall–Doane Academy in 1966 and went on to earn a drama degree from Carnegie Mellon University. Following her university training, she made her professional stage debut in 1970 in a production of Richard III at the California Shakespeare Festival.
After making her Broadway debut in 1975 in A Doll's House and acting with regional theater companies, Light achieved her television breakthrough in 1977 on the ABC daytime drama One Life to Live. Portraying Karen Wolek, her dramatic courtroom scenes brought the show significant critical acclaim and high ratings. Her performance earned her two consecutive Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1980 and 1981.
Following her daytime success, Light starred as advertising executive Angela Bower in the ABC sitcom Who's the Boss? from 1984 to 1992. During this period, she also appeared in television films, including The Ryan White Story. In the 1990s, she continued working in television sitcoms such as Phenom and The Simple Life, while earning strong reviews on stage for her lead role in the Off-Broadway production and national tour of the play Wit.
Light returned to television in the 2000s with a recurring role as Judge Elizabeth Donnelly on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and a starring role as Claire Meade on Ugly Betty, for which she earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. She also achieved major success on Broadway, receiving a Tony Award nomination for Lombardi in 2011 and winning back-to-back Tony Awards for Best Featured Actress in a Play for Other Desert Cities in 2012 and The Assembled Parties in 2013.
Her career continued with notable television roles, including Judith Brown Ryland in Dallas and Shelly Pfefferman in Transparent, which earned her multiple Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy nominations. She received another Primetime Emmy nomination for playing Marilyn Miglin in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story in 2018, and won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2024 for Poker Face. Her film credits include Tick, Tick... Boom! and The Menu.
Off-screen, Light has been married to television actor Robert Desiderio since 1985. Beginning in the early 1980s, she became a prominent advocate for people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and has long been involved in activism for LGBTQ rights, serving on the boards of organizations such as the Matthew Shepard Foundation and the Point Foundation. In 2019, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
