Junji Ito

Junji Ito is a prominent Japanese horror manga artist widely recognized for his contributions to the horror genre, particularly in body horror and cosmic horror. Born on July 31, 1963, in Sakashita, which is now part of Nakatsugawa, Gifu, Ito gained international fame for his distinctly unsettling narratives and detailed artwork. His most notable creations include Tomie, a narrative following an immortal girl who drives her admirers to madness, Uzumaki, a multi-volume story detailing a town cursed by spirals, and Gyo, a story centered on aquatic life controlled by a bacterial death stench.

Raised in a rural town near Nagano, Ito developed an early interest in horror. As a young child, he read horror manga introduced by his two older sisters, including works by Kazuo Umezu and Shinichi Koga. Early life experiences, such as walking through a dark underground tunnel containing spider crickets to reach his home's bathroom, later influenced the sinister settings in his stories. He began drawing manga at the age of four, drawing inspiration from ghost stories, classic horror movies, and authors such as H. P. Lovecraft and Edogawa Ranpo.

Before pursuing a full-time artistic career, Ito studied at a vocational school for dental technology and worked as a dental technician for three years. His anatomical studies of medical textbooks provided him with an understanding of muscle structures that later informed his physical horror designs, while dental tools influenced his drawing methods. In 1987, he submitted a short narrative to Monthly Halloween that received an honorable mention for the Kazuo Umezu Prize. This work ran for thirteen years and was serialized as Tomie, launching his professional career as a mangaka.

Throughout his career, Ito has produced a diverse body of work, ranging from serialized manga to short story collections and comedic self-parodies, such as Junji Ito's Cat Diary: Yon & Mu. He has also adapted notable literary works, including Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and collaborated with writer Takashi Nagasaki and former diplomat Masaru Sato on the series Rasputin the Patriot. His narratives often focus on themes of obsession, prey-predator relationships, and unpredictable malevolent forces.

Ito's works have been adapted into various media formats, including live-action films and animated series such as Junji Ito Collection and Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre. He has also supplied artwork for musical releases and lent his likeness to video game projects.

Over his career, Ito has earned significant international recognition. His work Uzumaki received Eisner Award nominations in 2003 and 2009. He earned his first Eisner Award in 2019 for Best Adaptation from Another Medium for Frankenstein. In 2021, he received two additional Eisner Awards for Remina and Venus in the Blind Spot, winning Best Writer/Artist and Best U.S. Edition of International Material - Asia. He won a fourth Eisner Award in 2022 for Lovesickness and was honored with the Inkpot Award at San Diego Comic-Con in 2023.

In his personal life, Ito married picture book creator Ayako Ishiguro in 2006. As of 2025, the couple has two daughters.
