Jun Kunimura

Jun Kunimura, born Yoshihiro Yonemura on November 15, 1955, is a Japanese actor who has built an extensive performing career across Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and the United States. He is internationally recognized for his versatility, collaborating with renowned directors across various global film industries.

Born in Yatsushiro within Kumamoto Prefecture, Kunimura moved with his family to Amagasaki in Hyōgo Prefecture shortly after his birth. At two years old, his family relocated again to Osaka. He pursued his early training by graduating from an acting program run by the Osaka Broadcasting Corporation, a theater troupe affiliated with a local NHK station. During his early life, he drew inspiration from actor Yūsaku Matsuda.

Kunimura made his screen debut in 1973 with a small role in the disaster movie Tidal Wave, directed by Shirō Moritani. He subsequently acted in television series such as Ayu no Uta and Yôi don. His major breakthrough came when he secured his first leading role in Kazuyuki Izutsu's film Gaki Teikoku.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Kunimura expanded his reach into Hong Kong cinema, notably appearing as a Triad gunman in the opening sequence of John Woo's Hard Boiled. In 1989, he entered American cinema through Ridley Scott's Yakuza action movie Black Rain, which was filmed in Osaka and featured his mentor, Matsuda.

Throughout his career, Kunimura has gained global recognition working with prominent Western filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino and Roland Emmerich, alongside Ridley Scott. He has also maintained a strong presence in Asian cinema, working with major Japanese directors including Takashi Miike, Hideaki Anno, Lee Sang-il, and Ryuhei Kitamura.

In 2016, Kunimura starred in the South Korean horror film The Wailing, directed by Na Hong-jin. His acclaimed performance earned him both Best Supporting Actor and the Popular Star Award at the 37th Blue Dragon Film Awards, marking a historic achievement as the first non-Korean and first Japanese performer to earn a nomination and win at the ceremony.
