Kasumi Arimura

Kasumi Arimura is a Japanese television and film actress born on February 13, 1993, in Itami, Hyōgo Prefecture. She attended Hyogo Prefectural Itami Nishi High School and successfully passed an audition for the talent agency FLaMme in December 2009. Her older sister, Airi Arimura, works as a model and actress.

Arimura made her television series debut in May 2010 through Hagane no Onna. She gained wider public attention in 2013 after appearing in the morning drama Amachan as the younger version of Haruko Amano. Her major film breakthrough occurred when she took on the lead role in the drama Flying Colors, playing a troubled teenager who attends a cram school to gain university entry. The movie achieved major commercial success, becoming the eighth highest-grossing film in Japan for 2015. Her work earned her the Newcomer of the Year honor at the 39th Japan Academy Film Prize, alongside a nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.

In 2017, Arimura secured the main role in the morning television series Hiyokko. Her performance earned her the Best Actress award at the 94th Television Drama Academy Awards. Throughout this period, she appeared in various prominent feature films and television shows, including I Am a Hero, Cafe Funiculi Funicula, and Sekigahara, in which she portrayed a ninja named Hatsume recruited by samurai Ishida Mitsunari. She also starred in the drama Meet Me After School, portraying a young educator who falls in love with her fifteen-year-old student, a project that was selected as Best Drama at the 99th Japan Television Drama Academy Awards.

The year 2021 marked significant milestones in her career. She headlined We Made A Beautiful Bouquet, another eighth-ranked Japanese box office success of the year, which secured her the Best Actress trophy at the 45th Japan Academy Film Prize. Additionally, she joined the live-action Rurouni Kenshin franchise, playing Yukishiro Tomoe in both Rurouni Kenshin: The Final and Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning, two manga adaptations that earned over 6.5 billion yen combined. On television in 2021, she starred in Life's Punchline as a woman struggling with employment who meets stand-up comedians, winning Best Supporting Actress at the 108th Television Drama Academy Awards.

Arimura continued taking diverse roles in 2022, playing a voluntary probation officer supervising paroled convicts in the series Zenkamono, followed by its movie adaptation. She also featured in the television special Adventure of Comandante Cappellini alongside Ninomiya Kazunari, starred in the television series Ishiko and Haneo, and appeared in the December 2022 film release Phases of the Moon.

Her activity persisted into 2023 and 2024 with multiple major projects. In early 2023, she performed in the 62nd NHK taiga drama What Will You Do, Ieyasu? and starred in the Netflix feature Call Me Chihiro. In mid-2024, she appeared as a supporting character in the movie Dear Family and co-starred with Ren Meguro in the series Where Does The Sea Begin. Later in November 2024, she featured in the Netflix show Beyond Goodbye, which reached ninth place among non-English series on the platform during its opening week.
