Ryunosuke Kamiki

Ryunosuke Kamiki is a Japanese actor and voice performer who began his career as a child actor. Over a career spanning more than twenty-five years, he has appeared in numerous high-profile feature films, television dramas, and animated productions, earning widespread recognition and multiple industry awards.

Kamiki was born on May 19, 1993, in Saitama Prefecture. During his infancy, he experienced severe health issues, spending months in intensive care and being given a one percent chance of survival. He remained hospitalized until seven months of age, with doctors anticipating that he might live with long-term disabilities if he survived. Seeking to create a lasting record of his life, his mother chose to enter him into acting. He grew up in a household that included his parents, grandparents, an older sister who was eleven years his senior, and two nieces.

Kamiki joined the Central Group talent agency and made his initial commercial appearance at age two in 1995. He secured his television acting debut in a leading role for the 1999 drama series Good News. At age eight in 2001, animator Hayao Miyazaki scouted Kamiki, leading to voice-over performances in several Studio Ghibli films, such as Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, earning him the nickname "Ghibli Child." His early film credits also include Bayside Shakedown 2, Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur 2006, and Big Man Japan. He won his first award for the 2004 feature Backdrop del mio Papa.

His film portfolio expanded with prominent and primary roles, starting with Takashi Miike's feature The Great Yokai War in 2005, followed by Daihachi Yoshida's drama The Kirishima Thing in 2012. In 2014, Kamiki took supporting roles in the period action features Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno and Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, as well as Miike's horror production As the Gods Will. To prepare for specific roles throughout his career, he overcame a fear of swimming for The Great Yokai War and learned both the piano and sign language for the television project Kokoro no Ito.

In 2016, Kamiki voiced the lead protagonist in Makoto Shinkai's anime feature Your Name, earning the Best Actor Award at the 11th Seiyu Awards. He subsequently provided supporting voice work for Shinkai's animated releases Weathering with You in 2019 and Suzume in 2022. In 2023, he co-starred alongside Minami Hamabe in the television series Ranman and Takashi Yamazaki's feature Godzilla Minus One. His performance in the film gained international critical recognition and the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Actor.

Beyond traditional screen acting, Kamiki published his first book, Master's Cafe: The Fulfillment of Masters' Dreams, in 2015. He made his stage acting debut in 2019 in the production Beautiful: The Woman Who Met with God. In 2020, he launched a YouTube channel, hosted a radio broadcast, and directed a music video. He also undertook photography work, serving as the photographer for actor Takeru Satoh's 2021 calendar and designing his own twenty-fifth anniversary calendar featuring literary adaptations.

In March 2021, Kamiki left the Amuse agency to co-found the management firm Co-LaVo alongside Satoh. While filming the project From Miyagi in 2022, he participated in an excavation in Minamisanriku, discovering an ancient ichthyosaur fossil that was later placed on display at the Minasan Museum. That same year, he was voted the Most Powerful Actor in Japan. On February 10, 2026, Kamiki announced his marriage to his non-celebrity partner.
