Over a career spanning four decades, she has appeared in over fifty film and television projects, becoming known for her roles in both daytime and prime-time television series.
Farentino was born in Lucas Valley, California. Before transitioning to acting, she worked as a model and briefly attended San Jose State University before dropping out.
Her acting career began in 1982 when she was cast as a star in the CBS daytime soap opera Capitol, a role she played until 1987. She then moved into prime-time television with a female leading role in the ABC comedy-drama series Hooperman from 1987 to 1988.
Throughout the 1990s, Farentino starred in several dramatic television series. Her prominent roles during this decade include Equal Justice (1990–1991), EZ Streets (1996–1997), and Get Real (1999–2000). She also starred as Devon Adair in NBC's science fiction series Earth 2 (1994–1995), a role recognized as the first female commander depicted in a science fiction work. Her film and miniseries credits include the 1993 comedy film Son of the Pink Panther and the 1999 miniseries Storm of the Century.
In addition to her starring roles, Farentino guest-starred in numerous television programs, including NYPD Blue in 1994, the revival of The Outer Limits in 1996, JAG in 2002, CSI: Miami in 2003, and Hawaii Five-0 in 2011. Her later television work includes playing Isabelle Matia-Paris in the ABC series Wildfire and Beverly Barlowe in the Syfy comedy-drama series Eureka from 2006 to 2012.
Beyond acting, Farentino has worked in journalism and production. She produced specials for PBS/WXEL, earning a Suncoast Emmy nomination for Saving Americas Heroes. She has also served as a special correspondent for CBS News covering Guardian Angel units and embedded multiple times with United States Air Force Special Forces rescue units in Afghanistan.
In 1995, while pregnant with her daughter Sophie, Farentino was selected as one of People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People. Her personal life includes marriages to Scott Staples from 1979 until their divorce in 1983, actor James Farentino from 1985 to 1988, and later Gregory Hoblit.
