About JoJo
Joanna Noëlle "JoJo" Levesque, born December 20, 1990, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She gained widespread recognition as a young pop and R&B artist following the release of her debut single "Leave (Get Out)" and self-titled debut album. Throughout her career, JoJo has recorded multiple studio albums, acted in feature films and television series, and performed on Broadway in Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
JoJo was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, and raised in Foxborough, Massachusetts, as an only child by her mother following her parents' divorce. Her father sang as a hobby, while her mother was trained in musical theater. JoJo began singing at age two, imitating nursery rhymes, R&B, jazz, and soul music. As a child, she acted in local professional theaters and appeared on televised talent competitions, including Kids Say the Darndest Things, Destination Stardom, and America's Most Talented Kids.
In 2003, at age twelve, record producer Vincent Herbert noticed JoJo on America's Most Talented Kids, leading to her signing with Blackground Records. She released her debut single, "Leave (Get Out)," in 2004. Reaching number one on the U.S. Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart, it made thirteen-year-old JoJo the youngest solo artist to achieve a number-one single in the United States. Her debut studio album, JoJo, reached number four on the Billboard 200 and sold over four million copies worldwide.
In 2006, JoJo made her feature film debut in Aquamarine and starred in the comedy RV. Later that year, she released her second studio album, The High Road, which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200. The album featured the single "Too Little Too Late," her first top-five hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and went on to sell over three million copies globally. By 2007, she had sold more than seven million records worldwide.
Contractual disputes with her label delayed JoJo's third commercial album. During this transition, she independently released two mixtapes, Can't Take That Away from Me in 2010 and Agápē in 2012, and took acting roles in the television film True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet and the film G.B.F. Following a lawsuit, JoJo was released from her contract and signed with Atlantic Records in 2014, releasing the EP III in 2015 and the top-ten album Mad Love in 2016.
JoJo left Atlantic Records in 2017 to establish her own imprint, Clover Music, through a joint venture with Warner Records, re-recording and re-releasing her first two albums in 2018. She later released her fourth and fifth studio albums, Good to Know and December Baby, in 2020, followed by her sixth studio album, Trying Not to Think About It, in 2021.
