Bobby Brown

Robert Barisford Brown Sr., born February 5, 1969, is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, and dancer. Alongside frequent collaborator Teddy Riley, he is recognized as a pioneer of new jack swing, a musical genre fusing hip-hop and R&B. Brown first gained international prominence as a founding member of the R&B and pop vocal group New Edition before embarking on a successful solo career.

Brown was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in the Orchard Park Projects in Roxbury. He was one of eight children born to Carole Elizabeth, a teacher, and Herbert James Brown, a construction worker. At the age of three, seeing James Brown perform in Boston inspired his dream of becoming a professional singer. He joined a church choir to hone his vocal abilities and drew musical inspiration from artists such as Rick James, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, and Prince.

In 1980, Brown co-founded the vocal group that became New Edition alongside Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Ralph Tresvant, and later Ronnie DeVoe. The group signed with Streetwise Records and earned a Billboard R&B number-one single with "Candy Girl" in 1983. They achieved further pop success with hits like "Cool It Now" and "Mr. Telephone Man." Citing financial dissatisfaction and internal group conflicts, Brown left New Edition in early 1986.

Brown launched his solo career with MCA Records, releasing his debut album, King of Stage, in 1986, which featured the number-one R&B single "Girlfriend." His 1988 follow-up album, Don't Be Cruel, marked his major commercial and critical breakthrough. It topped the Billboard 200 chart and produced five Billboard Hot 100 top-ten singles, including the number-one hit "My Prerogative" and "Every Little Step." The album earned him a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, along with American Music Awards, a Soul Train Music Award, and a People's Choice Award.

In 1989, Brown contributed to the Ghostbusters II soundtrack, yielding the hit single "On Our Own," and made a cameo appearance in the film. His 1992 album Bobby was certified 3× Platinum by the RIAA and generated top singles including "Humpin' Around," "Get Away," and "Good Enough." He later released the solo albums Forever in 1997 and The Masterpiece in 2012, while participating in musical collaborations with artists such as Glenn Medeiros, Babyface, Ja Rule, Damian Marley, and Macy Gray.

In 1992, Brown married singer Whitney Houston, with whom he had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown. Their high-profile relationship attracted extensive media coverage, and the couple later starred in the 2005 reality television series Being Bobby Brown before divorcing in 2007. Outside of music, Brown expanded into acting with featured roles in films including A Thin Line Between Love and Hate (1996) and Two Can Play That Game (2001).

Throughout his career, Brown periodically reunited with New Edition. The group released the Billboard 200 number-one album Home Again in 1996 and continued to perform together on various tours. In 2008, Brown also formed the splinter group Heads of State with Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill. His contributions to New Edition were recognized with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017, induction into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022, and induction into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2023.
