Sônia Braga

Sônia Maria Campos Braga is a Brazilian actress who achieved international acclaim through her work across Latin American and American film and television. She earned widespread recognition for her roles in major feature films and television productions, receiving nominations for the Golden Globe Awards, the BAFTA Awards, and the Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2020, her artistic contributions were recognized by The New York Times, which placed her among the top twenty-five actors of the twenty-first century.

Braga was born on June 8, 1950, to Afro-Brazilian Hélio Fernando Ferraz Braga and costume designer Maria Braga Jaci Campos. Raised alongside four siblings, she is also the aunt of actress Alice Braga. Her family relocated from Maringá to Curitiba and Campinas before settling in São Paulo. Following her father's death when she was eight years old, she attended a convent school. As a teenager, she worked as a receptionist and typist for an event catering company in São Paulo.

Her performance career began in her early teens on TV Tupi children's programs and teleteatros after her brother secured a role on the network. She joined a theater group in Santo André and made her stage debut in George Dandin at age seventeen. Shortly after, she appeared in the 1968 film O Bandido da Luz Vermelha and secured a role in the original Brazilian stage production of the musical Hair. In the early 1970s, she built her television presence through supporting roles in soap operas and feature films, becoming a household name through the 1972 children's series Vila Sésamo.

Braga achieved major national stardom in Brazil by starring in the 1975 telenovela Gabriela. She brought another famous literary character to life in the 1976 feature film Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, which became a domestic box-office success and achieved international renown, earning her a BAFTA nomination. Throughout the late 1970s, she continued to star in high-profile television projects such as Saramandaia, Espelho Mágico, and Dancin' Days, while also performing in children's theater productions.

In the early 1980s, Braga shifted her focus toward feature films, winning the best actress award at the Gramado Film Festival for Eu Te Amo. She gained international prominence for her role in the 1985 film Kiss of the Spider Woman, which brought her a Golden Globe nomination. She subsequently moved to the United States and appeared in Hollywood feature films including The Milagro Beanfield War, Moon over Parador—which brought her a second Golden Globe nomination—and The Rookie. In 1994, her role in the television film The Burning Season earned her additional nominations for both an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Braga maintained an active presence in both American and Brazilian media, obtaining U.S. citizenship in 2003. She appeared in American television series such as The Cosby Show, Sex and the City, American Family, Alias, and Luke Cage. In Brazil, she returned to television with roles in soap operas like Força de um Desejo and Páginas da Vida, and won a best supporting actress award at the Gramado Film Festival for the 2001 feature Memórias Póstumas.

Braga received critical acclaim for her starring performance in the 2016 film Aquarius, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival. She followed this success with appearances in notable films such as Wonder, Bacurau, Fatima, and The First Omen. Today, she maintains her primary residency in New York City while also keeping homes in Rio de Janeiro and Niterói.
