Jimmy Carr

James Anthony Patrick Carr (born 15 September 1972) is a British and Irish comedian, presenter, and writer. He is widely recognized for his deadpan delivery of rapid-fire one-liners and dark humor. Carr rose to prominence as a television host, presenting Channel 4 comedy panel shows including The Big Fat Quiz of the Year, 8 Out of 10 Cats, and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. In addition to his extensive television work, Carr maintains an international career as a touring stand-up comedian.

Carr was born in Isleworth, London, to Irish parents from Limerick, and is the second of three sons. He spent much of his youth in Farnham Common, Buckinghamshire, attending Farnham Common School, Burnham Grammar School, and the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe. Diagnosed with dyslexia, he learned to read and write at his expected level around age ten or eleven. He later studied social science and political science at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, graduating with first-class honours in 1994. After working in marketing at Shell, Carr took voluntary redundancy in January 2000 to pursue comedy full time.

Carr performed his first unpaid stand-up set in December 1999 and his first paid gig in January 2000. He established himself in London comedy clubs before appearing at the 2001 Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the revue Rubbernecker alongside Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, and Robin Ince. In 2002, he brought his debut solo show, Bare Faced Ambition, to the Fringe, earning a nomination for the Perrier Award.

His television career grew through hosting Channel 4 programs such as Distraction and Your Face or Mine?. Carr began hosting 8 Out of 10 Cats in 2005 and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown in 2012. His other presenting credits include 10 O'Clock Live, A Comedy Roast, Roast Battle, I Literally Just Told You, LOL: Last One Laughing UK, and Am I The A******?. In the United States, he hosted the US adaptation of Distraction, presented the Netflix series The Fix, and appeared on late-night shows hosted by Conan O'Brien, Jay Leno, Jimmy Fallon, and James Corden.

Carr considers stand-up comedy his primary discipline. He has toured extensively with shows including Gag Reflex, which won the 2006 British Comedy Award for Best Live Stand-Up, as well as Repeat Offender, Rapier Wit, Terribly Funny, and Laughs Funny. He released several stand-up DVDs and became the first British comedian with a Netflix stand-up special, Funny Business, in 2015, later releasing Natural Born Killer in 2024. Carr frequently performs in Los Angeles, has opened for Dave Chappelle, co-headlined shows with Jim Jefferies, and participated in high-profile roast events.

Carr has also made television guest appearances on QI, A League of Their Own, and Top Gear, as well as radio broadcasts like The Museum of Curiosity. During the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent years, he expanded his media presence through numerous podcast guest appearances.
