About Greg Davies
Gregory Daniel Davies is a British comedian, actor, presenter, and writer born on 14 May 1968. He is best known for his television acting roles as Mr. Gilbert in The Inbetweeners, Greg in We Are Klang, Ken Thompson in Cuckoo, Dan Davies in Man Down, and Paul "Wicky" Wickstead in The Cleaner. He is also the creator of Man Down and The Cleaner, and serves as the host of the comedy panel game shows Taskmaster and Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
Davies was born in St Asaph, Wales, to Welsh parents Pauline and Bob Davies. His father drove his mother across the border into Wales when she went into labour to ensure he was born there. He grew up in Wem, Shropshire, which he considers his home. Davies attended Thomas Adams School in Wem before studying drama and English at Brunel University in Uxbridge, graduating in 1990. Before pursuing comedy full-time, he worked as a secondary school drama teacher for 13 years at Langley Academy, Orleans Park School, and Sandhurst School, experiences that frequently inform his stand-up routines.
Davies began performing stand-up comedy on the independent club circuit in 2005, having previously appeared on Dick & Dom in da Bungalow in 2003 and in Ashes adverts for Channel 4 in 2005. His breakthrough acting role came as the head teacher Mr. Gilbert in the sitcom The Inbetweeners from 2008 to 2010. He reprised this character in two feature films, The Inbetweeners Movie in 2011 and The Inbetweeners 2 in 2014, as well as the 2019 special The Inbetweeners: Fwends Reunited.
In 2012, Davies began starring in the BBC Three sitcom Cuckoo, a role he maintained through 2019. He created and starred in Channel 4's Man Down from 2013 to 2017, filming scenes in the exact classroom where he once taught. He became the host of Taskmaster in 2015, appeared in A Gert Lush Christmas and Doctor Who in 2015, and later created and starred in BBC One's The Cleaner starting in 2021. That same year, he assumed hosting duties for Never Mind the Buzzcocks. His other television credits include Mock the Week, Fast and Loose, Live at the Apollo, and Would I Lie to You?
As a stand-up artist, Davies was nominated for three Chortle Awards in 2007. His debut solo show, Firing Cheeseballs at a Dog, was nominated for a Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Award and the Malcolm Hardee Award in 2010. He followed this with the tour The Back of My Mum's Head in 2013 and You Magnificent Beast in 2017, the latter of which was filmed at the Hammersmith Apollo and released as a Netflix special in 2018. He also filmed a second Netflix special, Full Fat Legend, at the Royal Albert Hall.
For his role in Cuckoo, Davies received a nomination for the BAFTA Television Award for Best Male Comedy Performance in 2013. In December 2022, Brunel University awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Humanities, and in October 2025, he was named an honorary townsman of Wem. Standing 6 feet 8 inches tall, Davies resides in the Kennington area of London. Through the television program Who Do You Think You Are?, he learned that his family background traces back to 1660 in Snowdonia and includes descent from 12th-century Welsh king Owain the Great.
