About Anthony Kiedis

Anthony Kiedis, born November 1, 1962, is an American musician best known as the lead vocalist of the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Alongside his fellow band members, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Over the course of his music career, Kiedis has recorded thirteen studio albums with the group. His lyrical style evolved over time, shifting from early topics such as life in Los Angeles and sex toward more reflective themes, including love, loss, and addiction.

Kiedis was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Margaret "Peggy" Nobel and actor John Michael Kiedis, known professionally as Blackie Dammett. His paternal grandfather's family emigrated from Lithuania in the early 1900s, and his paternal grandmother was of mixed English, Irish, French, Dutch, and Mohican heritage. Following his parents' 1966 divorce, Kiedis was raised by his mother in Michigan before moving to Hollywood in 1974 to live with his father. Through his father, Kiedis entered acting, appearing in the 1978 film F.I.S.T., an ABC Afterschool Special, and the film Jokes My Folks Never Told Me.

While attending Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, Kiedis became close friends with Flea and Hillel Slovak. He exposed Flea to rock music and excelled academically, graduating with honors in June 1980. Kiedis enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles, to study writing, but dropped out during his second year to pursue music.

In 1983, Kiedis, Flea, Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons formed a group initially named Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem. After an initial performance at The Rhythm Lounge, the group evolved into the Red Hot Chili Peppers and signed a recording contract with EMI. They released their self-titled debut album in 1984, followed by Freaky Styley in 1985, which was produced by funk musician George Clinton.

During the 1980s, Kiedis struggled with severe heroin addiction, which disrupted band activities. After briefly leaving the group to undergo rehabilitation in Michigan, he returned to write and record The Uplift Mofo Party Plan in 1987. Following Slovak's death from an overdose in 1988, Kiedis and Flea reformed the lineup with guitarist John Frusciante and drummer Chad Smith, releasing Mother's Milk in 1989, which peaked at number fifty-two on the Billboard 200.

In 1990, Kiedis was convicted of indecent exposure and sexual battery following an April 1989 incident at George Mason University. He continued to struggle with substance abuse over the years before achieving long-term sobriety in 2000. Through his work as the frontman of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kiedis established a long-standing career in rock music spanning several decades.
