Tom Selleck

Thomas William Selleck is an American actor and producer. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he moved to Los Angeles during his childhood and later attended the University of Southern California on a basketball scholarship. While pursuing business administration, he was encouraged to try modeling and acting, subsequently studying at the Beverly Hills Playhouse. Early in his career, Selleck appeared in print advertisements, commercial campaigns, and minor television roles.

Selleck gained international prominence for his breakout role as private investigator Thomas Magnum in the drama series Magnum, P.I., which aired from 1980 to 1988. His portrayal earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1984, alongside a Golden Globe Award. Following his success on television, he starred in feature films such as Three Men and a Baby, Three Men and a Little Lady, Quigley Down Under, Mr. Baseball, and In & Out.

Over the subsequent decades, Selleck built a prolific body of work across television and film. He held notable recurring roles, including Dr. Richard Burke on the comedy series Friends and casino owner A. J. Cooper on Las Vegas. He also produced and starred as small-town police chief Jesse Stone in a long-running series of television films based on novels by Robert B. Parker. From 2010 to 2024, he portrayed New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan in the drama series Blue Bloods.

Beyond acting, Selleck served in the California Army National Guard from 1967 to 1973, attaining the rank of sergeant. He has also worked as a public spokesman and endorser for various brands and organizations over the course of his career. Selleck resides on an avocado ranch in California and published a memoir reflecting on his life and career in 2024.
